These are the best gigs this weekend
Featuring Tom Odell, Cigarettes After Sex and more
Thomas Schoeffler Jr.
Strasbourg native Thomas Schoeffler Jr. is a dynamic one-man band, combining foot percussion, guitar and harmonica with melodious and penetrating vocals. Influenced by the likes of Johnny Cash, Tom Waits and Joy Division, Schoeffler's music style is a heady combination of blues, rock and country, resulting in a sound that's precise and raw. La Plantation. Fri 18. 200RMB (adults); 100RMB (students and children)
Florent Mothe + Mikelangelo Loconte
French singer and actor Florent Mothe is best recognised for his portrayal of Salieri in Mozart, a l'opera rock. As a solo artist, he creates summery, up-tempo French pop that's fun to bop along with, regardless of if you're a francophone or not (see last year's single 'Quoi de neuf'). He's joined by Italian singer, musician and fellow cast member Mikelangelo Loconte for an evening of catchy Euro pop-rock. Tango. Sun 20. 680RMB
Tom Odell
English singer-songwriter Tom Odell arrives in Beijing performing music from 2016 album Wrong Crowd, the highly-anticipated follow-up to his platinum-selling, Brit Award-winning debut. With his gut-wrenchingly honest lyrics and earworm-heavy choruses, the Ivor Novello award-winner creates catchy, piano-driven pop that's reminiscent of Keane and Elton John. Beijing Exhibition Center. Fri 18. 280-1,080RMB
Struggle Session + Die!ChawawaDie! Split Release Show
In celebration of their latest split release, Struggle Session and Die!ChawawaDie! are playing an epic evening of music at School Bar. Known for their frantically intense live shows (and aversion to clothing), Struggle Session return to Beijing firing on all cylinders after touring Morocco and Spain earlier this summer. Meanwhile, Die!ChawawaDie! will be making the trip up from Guangzhou to perform their dizzying brand of hardcore punk. School Live Bar. Fri 18. 60RMB; 50RMB presale
The Beauty
Formed in 2015, The Beauty have built up a fairly sizable following over the last couple years. Debuting music from their latest EP at School Bar, the Brit-pop inspired indie rockers are joined by Modern Sky favourites DaWenXi and local band CuiMei. School Live Bar. Sat 19. 70RMB; 60RMB presale
Slaves of the Prison
Death metal band Slaves of the Prison emerged on China's music scene back in 2015, and were promptly signed to Thanatology Productions the following year. Having released their first full-length album Deathward this past May, the rockers are set to bring their unique brand of melodic death metal to Beijing as part of their 'Being Towards Death' China tour. Modernsky Lab. Sun 20. 80RMB; 60RMB (presale)
Cigarettes After Sex
Brooklyn-based quartet Cigarettes After Sex have developed a devoted following due to music that's been described by Vice as 'elemental, hazy and romantic, but with a noir edge'. With influences like Mazzy Star and Red House Painters, Cigarettes After Sex are that rare band that can create a singular mood and atmosphere through their unique brand of brooding ambient pop. Tango. Mon 21. 220RMB; 180RMB (presale)
