The best ski destinations in Beijing and Chongli

Strap on your skis and shred some snow this winter

Within Beijing

Beijing isn’t just within the Sixth Ring Road. Head to these ski resorts away from the city centre, yet close enough to hit the slopes just a one-and-a-half hour drive away. Barring traffic jams, of course!

Beijing Huaibei International Ski Resort

For an Insta-worthy ski trip head to Huaibei. Its ski lift floats over the top of the Great Wall near Mutianyu and deposits you at the top, ready to ski back down the slopes with the wall snaking its way across the mountains around you. Facilities here are top notch with slopes for all levels and a ski school affiliated with France Ski Association. If the family gets tired of skiing or snowboarding, simply hire a snowmobile or try your hand at snow climbing. Skiing starts from 60RMB for one hour including equipment. 

Nanshan Ski Village

Nanshan is one of the largest and best-equipped resorts near Beijing: if the traffic is kind it takes just over 30 minutes by car via the Jingcheng motorway. The route takes you close to Chunhuiyuan Hot Spring Resort, which makes a worthwhile stop to soak tired muscles on the way home. Nanshan offers 25 ski trails for beginners to advanced skiers as well as ski instructors, a snowboard park and children’s play area. It also hosts many top class events during the season whether professional competitions or music festivals. Admission is 20RMB and skiing from 150RMB.

Shijinglong Ski Resort

Shijinglong Ski Resort offers a skating rink, hot spring bath and a location close to Longqing Gorge for a peek at the Ice and Snow Festival on the way home.

Chongli

If you have a weekend to spare, head to Chongli where many of the 2022 Winter Olympics events will be held. Chongli is a rapidly developing ski town about a three-hour drive from Beijing and is full of shops that sell or rent ski clothing and equipment. It is also brimming with hotels – the ones within the ski-resorts make for fancier stays – and restaurants that make it a great weekend ski destination.

Fulong Four Seasons Town

One of the newest mega ski resorts to sprout up in the area in anticipation of the 2022 Winter Olympics is Fulong Four Seasons Town. The massive property with a total ski area of 750,000 sqm has one of the most ski trails in the area. There are 37 in total of varying difficulties and its longest runs over 3.7 km.Children will love its snow entertainment facility which has trainers on hand to help, while its 48,000 sqm hot springs centre on site should soothe any aches from a day and night – Fulong also offers night skiing – of shredding the slopes. 

Wanlong

This resort operates 32 trails for all levels with rental equipment and English-speaking ski instructors for hire. The three star resort hotel has an attached spa with a free visit included for each guest. Snowboarding (parallel slalom) will be held here during the 2022 Olympics. Cost to ski starts from 280RMB. 

Thaiwoo Ski & Alpine Resort

Fellow Olympics host Thaiwoo Resort with a peak of 2,160 metres has 28 ski trails for all levels of skiers. It also has a comprehensive beginner ski centre; perfect for children new to the sport. For a more immersive experience, you might want to consider its enrolling your kids in its Winter Camps that are run by professionals. It also hosts a couple of festivals such as the Thaiwoo FIS Freestyle Ski Moguls World Cup on December 21-22.
