The wiener takes it all: 3 to try at new hot dog joint Super Dog

Excellently priced hot dogs at new Sanlitun outlet

In a city that's so caught up on its pizza and burgers – is there any other city out there that has whole democracies dedicated to electing their best? – the humble hot dog is often neglected. While sausage-stuffed buns appear on the odd menu here and there in Beijing, options can be slim, and dedicated dog sellers have come and gone in recent years.

But on October 1 2018 – the 69th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, no less – Super Dog opened its doors in Sanlitun SOHO. The two events are completely unrelated, but with well-priced wieners as the main event here, it might just be the start of something big. Time to head over and try them out, pig out or maybe even smash the world record of eating 74 hot dogs in ten minutes. Here are the best of their bunch.

Classic hot dog

We don't think the term 'session hot dog' has been used yet, nor is it an idea approved by any medical professional, but at just 10RMB, Super Dog's Classic might be the one when you and the gang want to binge on the wieners. A chicken sausage topped with crispy fried shallots and a trinity of ketchup, mustard and sweet mayo proves that, sometimes, less is more. It's also small enough to fall under 'snack', so put in the order for your next one while you're putting the first away.

Super Mexico

This one also keeps it simple, with a chicken sausage topped liberally with pickled jalapeños, mustard and ketchup, and it packs a bite – cool it down with a can of A&W cream soda or root beer, or a vanilla Coke (all 10RMB). If you want it even simpler, Super Dog also offer bunless Viennese- and German-style sausages at just 8RMB and 7RMB a pop, while sides of mashed potato and cups of corn (5-8RMB) are also available.

New Orleans

The buns here aren't anything to write home about, but for overall value, Super Dog hits the mark. We're not sure why this one takes its name from New Orleans, but it's perhaps a little bit more classic than the Classic itself, swapping the chicken for a pork snag. It's the straightforward standout on the menu, but if simplicity isn't for you, try the more affronting Super Hotdog (23RMB) – a chicken sausage with added facon, extra ham and a liberal smothering of sauces.

Super Dog B1-330, Building 5, Sanlitun SOHO, 8 Gongti Bei Lu, Chaoyang district.

 10am-9pm daily.
