Where to Find the Best Healthy Breakfasts in Shanghai

2016-11-23 ShanghaiWOWeng

Ahh breakfast… the most important meal of the day.

A good breakfast should consist of some complex carbs to keep you energised until lunch, a little bit of protein and some healthy fats to keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Don’t set your day off on the wrong foot by eating something fatty and oily! Instead, check out our round up of the top places in the city to eat a healthy breakfast!

EGG

Address: No.12 North Xiangyang Road

Hours: Daily, 8am-6.30pm

Located on a street with traditional residential buildings, EGG stands out with its very contemporary décor. The two floor minimalist loft is a great environment, decorated with rustic wooden tables, chairs and fresh green plants. The open kitchen makes this place even more welcoming.  Most customers come to EGG for their avocado sandwich, topped with avocado sauce, medium cooked egg and wild rocket with olive oil.  The sauce is made of avocado, mint, lemon and feta cheese.  Get there early as sometimes you need to wait for a seat!

Though opened only a few months ago, Hunter Gatherer on Yanping Road already hunted and gathered a bunch of fans by serving high quality organic vegetables, fruits and natural bakery. The interior is bright and spacious and decorated in simple industrial style. Vivid colors, funny topography, veg and fruit illustrations are applied in the interior, which complement all the healthy food displayed in the shop. Try their Brown Rice Tamago Wrap for a nice protein breakfast and takeaway juice and chopped fruit for a snack at work.

WAGAS

Address: multiple locations.

Hours: Daily, 7am-11pm

You’re likely quite familiar with Shanghai Wagas already. They have an awesome reputation of providing quality, healthy ingredients wrapped up in tasty, light meals. Some of us are put off by their premium price tag, however the quality and taste in our opinion is well worth it. Head there in the mornings for their signature “Kevin Bacon” omelette with a refreshing cup of coffee.

ELEMENT FRESH

Address: multiple locations.

Tel: 021 8025 5797 (delivery hotline)

Hours: Daily 9am-10pm

Element Fresh offers a great selection of healthy Western and Asian dishes, freshly squeezed juices and other beverages. Try the “Elvis Presley” for breakfast: French toast with banana, peanut butter, bacon and eggs. Laffa Bread Salad is also a good option combined with either orange carrot ginger juice or miso yogurt. With some of the top female tennis players in the world endorsing them, Element Fresh dedicates itself to serving super food and promoting a healthy lifestyle. Most branches are located at big shopping malls or business office buildings so can be a little pricy but worth it.  Online ordering is also available.

YOGALICIOUS

Address: 6th floor No.376 road Wukang Road

Hours: Daily, 9:30am-6:30pm

Originally started as a pop-up, Yogalicious combines breakfast with morning yoga! The owner Angie teaches yoga for RMB 200 drop-in sessions, which can be followed up with a tasty bowl of goodness! Thick smoothies are topped with nuts, seeds, berries and fruit, or alternatively, try green seedy morning muffin. There are lots of great options here and the view from the terrace is enough of a reason to go alone!

WHEAT HEALTHY EATERY

Hours: Daily, 10am-11pm

Healthy, tasty food at a reasonable price is what you’ll find at WHEAT. There are vegan, gluten-free and vegetarian options available, along with other incredible treats. Fresh smoothies and juices are among their best sellers, as are the delicious banana pancakes and quinoa salads. For extra cautious diners, calories are displayed on the menu!

Tel: 021 5465 1288

Located on one of the Shanghai’s prettiest streets in the French concession, Green and Safe is one of the best breakfasts in town. The truffled scramble eggs with smoked salmon is a must-have, however there are plenty of other options and juices available on the menu.

On the first floor, you can even stock up on organic food to prepare for a healthy lunch.

BOWL’D

Address: No.255 Anfu Road

Tel: 021 6427 5251

Noted as being the first acai bowl store in Shanghai, Bowl’d on Anfu Road offers a sweet mix of healthy goodness and naughty treats. Served in generously sized bowls, smoothies and acai mixes are on offer, however we suggest “The Hulk” - acai, spinach, hemp protein, avocado banana and housemade almond milk. Wash it down with a warming orange, carrot and ginger juice.
