Shanghai Foodies Reveal Their Fave Spots & Under RMB100 Eats

Shanghai has so many excellent restaurants, sometimes you might need a little help sorting through the pile. That’s where foodies come in. They’re out on the front lines, trying, tasting, sipping it all to determine what’s what. We asked some of them to fill us in on the best places to eat for under RMB 100, as well as their favorite spots in the city.

Wangji scallion pancake on Zhenning Lu. It is super close to my new cafe Brut Cake Cafe.

Recently, Daimon Bistro. It reminds me of my hometown Hong Kong. I used to live in Kowloon City, which inspired Chef Alvin Leung for this restaurant.

Best dinner spot under RMB 100?

The Arabian restaurant with a Silk Road twist: Makan. The portions are pretty big and the prices are very good, I like the atmosphere there, as well as the comfort and elegance.

Your favorite spot? 

Definitely Raw Eatery and Wood Grill, followed by Epices & Foie Gras. As a meat lover, I really like the high quality of it. In those 2 places the meat is fabulous and, honestly, not just that. Juan Campos in Raw has done some amazing work with the appetizers, which are seriously stunning. In Epices & Foie Gras the foie gras is amazing and the dessert is brilliant.

Mex&Co because I love Mexican food. It’s super fulfilling eating a burrito alone, their nachos are good too. They have shops in multiple locations, basically my quick solution for a casual dinner.

Your favorite spot? 

Chartres Garden. Elegant decor, great ambience, affordable price and consistent food quality are why this restaurant keeps bringing me back; it’s suitable for pretty much everything, whether you’re hanging out with friends, having a date or for a business meeting. You can also have some privacy by choosing the right seat.

My favorite place in Shanghai would be Tianzifang.  I love wandering the streets, taking photos or people watching.  You never know what treasures you will find.

My pick for a meal under 100 is Nicolson's classic cheese burger: you can taste the quality of the burger.   Start off with 100% angus beef patty, lettuce, tomato, house made 1000 island, American cheese, grilled onion on a butter bun, it's the best burger I've tasted in Shanghai.

Saigon MAMA in Shanghai center. They have the real quality taste of Pho, and the environment is so nice. I like the Vietnam spring roll and the signature Pho there.

Spice Bazaar as my favorite affordable dinner spot. The spiciness...noodles...veg...mint leaves and of course the lamb. Spice Bazaar helped me fall in love with eggplant and lamb, and up until I moved to Shanghai I had no clue what Xinjiang food even was.

The Fellas Terrace, Italian Resto-Bar where you can eat authentic Italian food and get some excellent cocktails. I love this place not only for the food, but even for the astonishing view on the bund and the wonderful terrace.
