Your Guide to the Convenient Store Condom Section

2017-02-14 ShanghaiWOWeng

Living in a foreign country is difficult for a thousand reasons. Condom purchasing is yet another tedious task. When you see know familiar brands from home how do you know what to select? Luckily for you, I’ve given up on sleep this past week and tried five of the most common and well-known brands to give you a thorough review of what to expect!

OPTION ONE: DUREX

Durex is by far the most popular condom brand, for expats & locals alike. Trustworthy, comfortable, and a large variety. Durex is also one of the most expensive brands in China. They also have incredibly hilarious marketing ads, where last year they aired a three-hour-long “sex-tape orgy” which abruptly ends before the climax. Needless to say, they received harsh criticism from netizens & government officials alike.

  • Price: RMB 50 (3-pack)

  • Overall:  Durex was pleasant but nothing out of the ordinary.

  • Sensation For Her:  Using “pleasuremax tingle” version my partner mentioned feeling no such “tingle.”

  • Fit:  It was comfortable, durex sizing adequately fits the average Caucasian male, and they even have larger options if necessary.

  • Lubricant:   All durex condoms used a water-based lube, which is ingestible for those who like to use flavored condoms for oral-sex.

OPTION TWO: OKAMOTO

Slightly less expensive than durex, yet still a popular brand in China but definitely not as mainstreamed as durex. Their marketing technique is clever, and the literal translation of, “Love without hindrance” makes it all the more humorous, yet also passionate.

  • Price: RMB 30-40 (3 pack)

  • Overall:  Okamoto was my favorite overall, with mutual comfort and satisfaction and price.

  • Sensation For Her:  My partner said this is very comfortable and “realistic feeling” condoms used.

  • Fit:  Okamoto condoms are quite flexible and in my opinion the most comfortable to wear, without giving up much sensation. Flexible & fitting for average westerner.

  • Lubricant:   Once again, it was a water-based lube but Okamoto seems have more lubrication than the others.

OPTION THREE: JISSBON

Jissbon is a is a very domestic company, with their entire website in Chinese and not so great translations. Jissbon prices are similar to that of Okamoto, slightly cheaper than durex.

They used this “Happy Women’s Guide” marketing campaign for Valentine’s day, offering a catchy tune as a gift.

  • Price: RMB 50 (3 pack)

  • Overall:  It was mediocre at best.

  • Sensation For Her:  My partner mentioned this was her favorite in terms of added sensation. Thank you “dots joy!”

  • Fit:  I would strongly recommend Jissbon to the smaller fellas out there, as for the average male it was too constricting (online reviews agree).

  • Lubricant:   There was less lubricant than we would’ve preferred. Still water-based.

OPTION FOUR: SKYN

SKYN is actually a Jissbon sub-product surprising enough. Jissbon must’ve developed this in response to sizing complaints. Unfortunately, SKYN is even more expensive than Jissbon & Durex,  RMB 60- 75 RMB a 10-pack, depending on edition.

  • Price: RMB 60-75 (10 pack)

  • Overall:  Comfortable, thin, and pleasurable, but expensive.

  • Sensation For Her: Nothing out of the ordinary. Normal sensation. A decent condom but not worth the price.

  • Fit: Lots of flexibility and sizing to a western standard.

  • Lubricant:   Not quite enough lubricant comparative to others.

Before you write them off for pricing, check out their sensual western-targeting ad campaign first.

OPTION FIVE: AONI

Aoni, a condom company based in Guangdong, is more widely available in Hong Kong but deserves recognition. They hold the Guinness World Record for the world’s thinnest condom, by 2mm.

If the world’s thinnest condom doesn’t entice you, perhaps their twitter ad campaign will do the trick. It certainly earns my approval.

  • Price: RMB 60 (3 pack)

  • Overall:  Very comfortable and well worth the expense. (most expensive)

  • Sensation For Her: Most “natural” feeling, as if we weren’t using a condom. Partner’s second favorite in terms of sensation.

  • Fit: Flexible & fit well. Thinness causes concerns for tearing but in the end no rip or puncture occurred.

  • Lubricant:   well-lubricated that both my partner & I enjoyed these.
