Get to Know the New Hot Spot: Feng Sheng Li
Found 158 has gotten more than its fair share of ‘hot spot’ buzz lately, but there’s another spot you may not have checked out yet: Feng Sheng Li. This Maoming Bei Lu area has breweries, music venues, fashion brands, and a whole bunch of other goodies. The area’s official opening is set for this Friday, April 21st.
What is it: this 26,208 sqm area was purchased at auction for RMB 1 billion back in 2014. Developers Da Zhang Yuan quickly made plans to restore and construct a series of old Shanghai Shikumen style buildings.
Adopting a modern concept, it hopes to appeal to city dwellers through Western and Eastern cuisines, music performances, pop-up markets, art exhibitions, fashion shows, international culture, exhibitions and more.
So what’s there?
RESTAURANTS
HARD ROCK CAFÉ
The world famous Hard Rock is one of the anchor stores here, with all the American food, drinks and attitude you’d expect. They’ve got live gigs and, of course, the 834 sqm space is also filled with rock memorabilia like famous guitars, outfits and other items.
MISS MUSTACHE
Miss Mustache is an icon of Spanish cuisine in Shanghai, serving incredible arrays of Tapas and drinks. Iberian black pig ham, classic Tapas, paella and over 30 types of wine from all around the world.
HEAT FRENCH ROITISSERIE & BISTRO
We reviewed Heat a while back (see related articles below for that). It’s an amazing French Rotisserie & Bistro that has even won the enthusiastic endorsement of our French food editor. There’s also a wide selection of killer cocktails to catch a buzz on.
YI DUN
The area is East meets West and Yi Dun is a healthy dose of the former. This soup house offers a glimpse of Guangzhou with a large assortment of authentic soups, and a menu that changed daily.
Apart from the aforementioned restaurants, other great restaurants to checkout include the Zhen San Guan, Lu Yang Hua Gu, Yi Lu Ba, White Castle, Toshiki Kadomatsu and more.
BARS AND MUSIC LOUNGE
EZ5
EZ5 may bear suspicious resemblance to JZ Club, but they’re actually a Taiwanese jazz joint originally established back in 1991. Their new Feng Sheng Li venue is a close copy of the original, offering a big stage and lounge for live music and cocktails in a classy, sultry environment.
GOOSE ISLAND BREWHOUSE
One of the highlights of the whole area, Goose Island Brewhouse is a stunningly gorgeous space, with over 1200 sqm, 220 sofas, a brewery, and even a rare Spanish imported Josper oven, one of only 5 Josper ovens in the country. Beer lovers will enjoy over 40 types of fresh drafts available on the second floor, of which 4 are the classic flavors and 10 of them are seasonal ones that change several times a year.
BAKERY AND COFFEEHOUSE
BRIANT
Briant uses a big stone klin to bake its bread, giving baked goods here an aromatic slightly burnt smell, with a moist and chewy texture. Breads are freshly made daily and have to undergo a process of chilling to release and fermented yeast, contributing to the malty flavor.
Apart from Briant, other bakeries and coffeehouses to check out include Blue Tree, Buzz Time, Guo Ran Hai and Shang Dim Sum.
STYLE AND DESIGN
TIGI
From the UK and by brothers Toni & Guy, this is the second outlet of TIGI after their first in Jingan Jiali Centre. Following its classic style, it’s a trendy salon with a gorgeous blend of décor such as industrial looking cemented floors, dark bar seats and tons of mirrors.
