'Shoes: Pleasure and Pain' by V&A Museum Open in HKRI Taikoo Hui

“Shoes: Pleasure and Pain,” an exhibition curated by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London will be open to the public from September 22nd to November 5th at HKRI Taikoo Hui.

Featuring over 140 pairs of shoes from around the world and from as far back as the 1370s to demonstrate to visitors the different roles played by shoes across different culture, occasions and histories. 


The shoes are from both the V&A’s own collection as well as being on-loan from other museums and private collections.


Exhibits include shoes, mood boards, sketches, buckles, shoe parts, patterns, lasts and pullovers. 

 


This collection is curated by Helen Persson, who uses the collection to explore the transformative power of footwear; and how, more than any other aspect of dress, it has been used to express personality and capture identity.  This exhibition comprises of five sections: Transformation, Status, Seduction, Creation and Obsession. The V&A’s shoe collection is unrivalled; objects on display include footwear from around the globe (Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America).

Designers and fashion houses featured are Andreia Chaves, Beatrix Ong, Caroline Groves, Casadei for Fausto Puglisi, Chanel, Charlotte Olympia, Chau Har Lee, Christian Louboutin, Vivienne Westwood, Dolce and Gabbana, Gucci, Jimmy Choo, Julian Hakes, Karl Lagerfeld for Fendi, Marni, Mary Ching, Natacha Marro, Nicholas Kirkwood, Pierre Hardy, Prada, Rayne, Roger Vivier for Christian Dior, Salvatore Ferragamo, Sandy Powell for Swarovski, Sophia Webster, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Zaha Hadid.

 

Unique exhibits include the Cinderella shoe made for Lily James in the 2015 feature film Cinderella, designed by Swarovski.


Celebrity footwear featured in the exhibition includes a pair of Adidas football boots worn by David Beckham, two pairs of shoes worn by Kylie Minogue, a pair of boots worn by Elton John and the Vivienne Westwood boots worn by Naomi Campbell when she stumbled on the catwalk in 1993.


This exhibition is being toured across Mainland China and Hong Kong, and will travel from Shanghai to Chengdu, Guangzhou, Beijing and Hong Kong.
