What is National Day?
It’s that time of the year again, you’ve surely been hearing about ‘Golden Week,’ ‘October holiday,’ and ‘National Day,’ probably from Chinese colleagues getting ready to leave town. So what’s this holiday all about exactly?
What does is celebrate?
National Day celebrates the founding of the PRC (People's Republic of China).
Why October 1?
The PRC was officially founded on September 21, 1949, however, the Central People's Government celebrated the founding in Tiananmen Square on October 1 of that year.
Who celebrates?
Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, as well as Chinese nationals abroad.
How do they celebrate?
A variety of government-organized festivities, often including fireworks, concerts, parades and public displays of national pride. Tiananmen Square in Beijing especially is a hub of festive activities. Many people take the time off to travel, visit tourist sites and go on vacation. The National Day marks the start of one of two Golden Weeks in the PRC (the other is CNY).
