5 Great Craft Classes for Fall

2017-10-29 ShanghaiWOWeng

Winter is coming, and what better time to put down our picnic blankets and running shoes and to pick up some kind of bizarre craft. A craft that you can do inside, in front of a roaring fire, with your two grey hounds beside you and a large glass of wine in your hand and a cigar. Perfect.

If you are like me though, and don’t have a crafty/artistic bone in your body, then you will be needing some assistance. I have put together a list of the best (yet chilled) and craft classes available in Shanghai.

Group Classes

Sip'n Paint

Oh boy to I love this one. Go paint some stuff and get sloshed with your mates. They offer oil painting classes as well as water color, you can go on your own or as part of a group and it’s generally great fun. Their teachers are all super qualified and really interesting people. And if you want to organize a painting party for a birthday or something they can be flexible on numbers pricing etc. For more information about times, costs and signing up check out their WeChat.

The Pottery Workshop

If you have always dreamed of reliving that scene from Ghost, you know this one…

Now is your chance skip down for pottery classes at The Pottery Workshop on Shaanxi Nan Lu. Suitable for adults and children, the classes are individual and group and they have a really great team of people working there. You can use as much clay as you like and make as much stuff as you like. It’s pretty messy, but fun!

Screen Printing at IdleBeats

Screen printing is really really cool and looks beautiful, even if you’re rubbish at it. In a tucked away basement near Jiaotong University, IdleBeats a community-based collective that teaches screen printing. It’s suitable for all levels, and they teach printing for t-shirts and tote-bags as well as paper for framing.

Craft’d

Craft’d are great, and they run loads of different craft classes. Lot’s of sowing-based activities but also things like candle and soap making class or even a mulled wine making class. Their studios are super homely and their classes get booked up fast. They also do craft classes for kids, which is great if you have some of those.

And they do some really cute stuff like this for Christmas…

Shaving in the Dark

This is less of an art class, but it is super cool. Shaving in the Dark is a collection of Illustrators, writers and cartoonists who work together to create a magazine every quarter based around a theme. It’s super cool, and as out there as you can get in mainland China without getting a slap on the wrist. They regularly meet up and draw together and generally hang out.

Well there you have it, no excuse now, time to get the fire crackling and get your craft on!
