Top 5 Most Popular Restaurants in Shanghai

2017-12-28 ShanghaiWOWeng

We feature a lot of articles about expat interests in Shanghai, but we thought we’d take a minute to highlight what our Chinese side has been up to. Recently they compiled a list of the 5 most popular Shanghai restaurants, according to KOL’s and internet buzz.

Ultraviolet

Price: RMB 5000

Expected Waiting Time: Reservations made 2 months in advance

Recommended Dishes: Set A, B, C

Ultraviolet and its head chef and mastermind Paul Pairet probably need no introduction, but we’ll offer one anyway. As one of the most buzzed about restaurants in town, UV has racked up countless accolades and awards, most notably the three-Michelin stars they received this past year.

Serving up to 10 customers daily, UV often requires a reservation up to three months in advance. Guests arrive at a set location and are driven to UV’s secretive venue space to begin an epic four-hour culinary journey that includes over 20 dishes, stunning LED visuals, music, wine and so much more.

And when it comes to that four-hour culinary experience, you’ll be floored from beginning to end. UV offers set menus A, B and C, which all have different, unique themes. Their latest set meny, UVC has four main parts – seafood, land, Asia and desserts.

For seafood, expect a refreshing treat of abalone, Spanish red shrimp, oysters, lobsters and more.

For land, have a picnic in the forest with handmade sandwiches, steak and mushrooms.

Chinese and French elements can be found brilliantly scattered throughout these dishes, such as sesame fish, black pepper steak and Peking duck.

End the meal with their fantasy theme dessert that comes with quirky names, like the “moon mushroom,” “woody eggplant,” “pink mousse with peach” and “greedy snake.”

seul&SEUL

Price: RMB 500

Expected Waiting Time: Reservations made 1 week in advance

Recommended Dishes: Hokkaido Sea Urchin Fried Gluten, Cherry Blossom Shrimp

Chinese KOL’s and social media savvy foodies loved seul&SEUL, which opened in Taikoo Hui recently. The restaurant has remained so popular that diners are expected to make reservations at least one week in advance to get a table.

Serving a hit menu of French delights, the restaurant puts a dark twist on the traditionally bright French restaurant setting, with velvet sofas, gold walls and more.

The open-style kitchen concept allows diners to watch on as the chefs create the French masterpieces and bring them to life.

With a set menu, the restaurant does not take any orders here, diners will all be served the same food.

As the chef is a local Shanghainese, he has created quite a fusion twist with French aspects on favorite Shanghainese classics, so expect dishes like French scallion noodles, fried gluten and more. Do note that dishes here are mostly seafood-based.

The food here largely caters to the Asian palette, with starters like green curry sweet prawns and Hokkaido sea urchin with fried gluten.

Their signature squid trio is made from cuttlefish juice, squid biscuit and smoked squid topped with a squid broth.

Their cherry blossom shrimps delight with flavors similar to scallion noodles, and shrimps bursting with the broth’s flavors.

Their dessert includes a wild honey ice-cream with frozen fruits, frozen using liquid nitrogen that is -18°C.

Lou Shang Hotpot

Price: RMB 480

Expected Waiting Time: Reservations made 1 month in advance, 3 hours queue

Recommended Dishes: Huajiao Chicken Soup, Salt and Pepper Corn

Possibly the most popular hotpot place in town, expect to wait around three hours before getting a seat here, and it’s said that reservations often have to be made at least a month in advance. Popular all day round, the restaurant is packed into the wee hours of morning.

Why is it so popular?

Sister company to the Grand HI-Lai Hotel Seafood Hot Pot Restaurant, the restaurant’s tasty secret lies in its Cantonese roots.

The setting is inspired by TVB scenes, so do expect some familiar sights from your favorite Hong Kong dramas when dining here.

Try out their hit huajiao chicken soup when dining here. Similar in taste to a shark’s fin broth, the broth is made by cooking the chicken for four hours, before adding the huajiao.

The restaurant also offers their own version of the Jiugongge sauce with homemade chilli oil, peanut sauce, sesame sauce, scallions, seafood sauce and more.

With an extensive menu of items, this is the perfect winter treat with quality meats and fishes in the form of ala carte dishes or platters.

Another must-try here is the fried beancurd skin, which goes really well with their broth. Also, other great dishes here include the watercress dumpling and huajiao wonton.

Apart from hotpot, try out their regular Yumcha menu that includes spicy wine snails, salt and pepper chicken legs, salt and pepper corn, and spicy claypot rice.

The warm and friendly service staff here add joy and enhance the dining experience with their warm smiles and superb service.

With impeccable service and food, it is no wonder many continue to dine here despite the long queues and advance reservation required.

Yu Ba Xian

Price: RMB 330

Expected Waiting Time: Reservations made 2 weeks in advance

Recommended Dishes: Shark’s Fin Soup Dumpling, Mango Pomelo Sago

Known for their yumcha menu, Yu Ba Xian offers a one-of-a-kind royal yumcha experience for diners. The restaurant looks straight out of the home of an imperial family, with service staff dressing the part as well.

The use of dark wood furniture, intricate wood carvings on the doors and walls, beautiful antique cutlery and traditional menu design adds to the ambience and theme of the restaurant.

With a great setting and menu, it is no wonder the restaurant continues to remain popular among the masses and  have garnered a huge yumcha fan base.

Apart from the standard yumcha food items, do try out their shark’s fin soup dumpling, shrimp toast, fresh shrimp chee cheong fun and beef balls.

The restaurant also provides a great dinner menu of traditional and creative Cantonese dishes for its diners.

Our favorite food here has to be the wasabi prawn balls which have a strong milky flavor complimented with the tangy wasabi sauce.

A great supper spot, expect to queue up to two hours during peak dining hours in the weekend for a table here.

Upon entering the restaurant, Jin Yu Man Tang charms with its four meter high waterfall and traditional Chinese décor, like the dragon sculptures and prosperity writings.

Known for their Chaozhou cuisine, the restaurant serves Cantonese dishes and is the No. 1 spot for those looking for a Cantonese-type supper.

We recommend trying out their milk bun, which has a crispy exterior and oozes milky custard when bitten in to.

Also, try out their prawn and crab congee or beef and egg porridge, along with their braised goose for a truly savoury Cantonese supper.

Their salt and pepper bullfrog legs are not only meaty, but crispy and full of flavor, especially when complemented with the restaurant’s secret dipping sauce.

Their shrimp with pomelo peel uses Thailand-imported pomelo, and the skilful chef prepares the full-flavored shrimps and pomelo, before topping it off with broth.

Going through a four hour long cooking process, the braised goose has a tender texture and goes well with a bit of white vinegar.

Despite the luxurious setting, the restaurant has an affordable price tag of around RMB 200 per pax for supper. Do note that after 9:30pm, the restaurant also provides a discount on their food items.
