Our Favorite Dishes of the Month

2017-12-28 ShanghaiWOWeng

It’s the end of the month, which means it’s time to tell you all about our favorite dishes. Even with all the holiday celebrations going on, we found time to eat out. We had new menu items at Heat, OH.MY.BURGER, STYX and Osteria. We stopped by the new Jing’an location of Danish eatery, EQ. We also had a leisurely and very delicious lunch at Michelin-starred PHÉNIX Eatery and Bar in The PuLi Hotel and Spa. A pretty good month, if we do say so ourselves.

EQ Nordic Eatery

We visited popular Danish restaurant, EQ, at their newest location in Jing’an to sample some of their traditional Nordic dishes. They will surely be popular with the residents of laowai-filled Sanhe Huayuan and neighboring apartment complexes due to the casual environment, fresh food and reasonable prices.

Danish shrimp roll (RMB 58) with homemade secret sauce, fresh dill and lemon juice

Tender Temptation (RMB 108) aka Iberico pork jaw with veggies

The shrimp roll is good for a light meal or a starter. Larger appetites are going to love the beer marinated Iberico pork jaw with root veggies and herbs. They actually cook the pork overnight with dark lager beer and virgin bee honey, making it supremely tender. They claim that you can eat it with a spoon and we have to agree. Desserts were also good and we can’t wait to return for breakfast which looks like a crazy good deal.

Heat French Rotisserie & Bistro

There are a number of decent and even amazing rotisserie chicken options around Shanghai these days. Fans of Heat swear by their authentic French style chicken, and their great location in Feng Sheng Li ensures a steady horde of diners. We made it by recently to try some of their new lunch items as well as a couple of old favorites.

Mushroom pasta with Ranger sauce and three types of mushrooms (RMB 88)

Cream cheese smoked salmon roll with lotus and lemon (RMB 58)

Bacon wrapped seared salmon with broccoli and cauliflower (RMB 148)

While we are already fans of the roast chicken, French toast and the amazing chicken liver pate (guys its only RMB 28 and we can’t get enough), we were very pleased with some of the new additions, notably the mushroom pasta with morel shiitake and white mushrooms with shredded pieces of rotisserie chicken. They also have two nice new salmon dishes: cream cheese smoked salmon roll with lotus chips and lemon and bacon wrapped seared salmon with vegetables.

Lychee

We always welcome a visit to Cotton Ding’s gorgeous three story lane house for cocktails and Asian fusion cuisine. This month we were reminded just how much we love the green curry mussels. They are seriously one of our favorite dishes in town. The rich and fragrant curry sauce with basil, coconut milk and chili jam is so good, we always order more rice and bread to sop up all that goodness.

Live mussels cooked with chili jam, coconut cream, tomatoes, Thai basil (RMB 148)

Gochujiang marinated roasted beef tenderloin with cucumber kimchi (RMB 138)

Smashed cumin baby potatoes, quail eggs, Thai basil with paprika aioli (RMB 38)

We also tried to awesome dishes that we haven’t had before. The smashed cumin potatoes are a really nice hot side dish. It is just the kind of thing comfort food, with a twist, that we enjoy this time of year. The gochujiang marinated roasted beef tenderloin is a great Korean inspired dish and the meat is cooked perfectly.

OH.MY.BURGER

This burger spot doesn’t do anything ordinary and we were recently very impressed by some of their newest offerings. Far from making fries a side dish, they serve up a massive four-in-one combo of their “amazing” fries: Cajun wedges, slim fries, duck fries and avocado fries. They are all good, but the Cajun wedges and avocado fries are our favorites. The slim fries are a nice textural contrast in the mix. And duck fat fries really don’t need elaboration. They are duck fat fries and that is awesome.

Four in one fries combo (RMB 50)

They call this baby the Guilty Pleasure (RMB 80)

In the world of crazy burgers, the Guilty Pleasure really takes the cake. Or should we say donut? It is an insane amalgam of sweet and salty flavors. We especially like the outside the bun (see what we did there?) thinking when it comes to the triple layer meat patty with cheese in between. And, of course, there is bacon.

Osteria

Osteria is one of the first restaurants that started the oyster craze in Shanghai and they have recently brought in a new Canadian chef, Jeremy Austin, to spruce up the menu. The focus is Italian cuisine with every single dish including some form of seafood in it. For example, the beef Carpaccio features shrimp head and the house made straciatella salad has sardines. They also have Guiness on tap which is a very traditional Irish oyster pairing (RMB 60; RMB 30 from 5-7pm daily) and Oysterlicious red house wine which is a private label Chardonnay.

Oysters can be ordered in groups of 6 (RMB 199) or 12 (RMB 299)

They have a unique selection of oysters, some of which can only be found at Osteria. The French Kiss oyster is from the east coast of Canada and the metallic aftertaste is a wonderful pairing with a pint of Guiness. We also loved the creamy Fat Bastard oysters and the light cucumber flavor of the Blue Pearl. If you like oysters, this is the place to go.

Risotto al nero (RMB 195) with rock crab

The squid ink risotto uses tomato jam and lobster butter made of lobster jus for an intense and flavorful rice dish. We aren’t even the biggest fans of squid ink, so the fact that this dish impressed us so much is really saying something. Additionally, they have daily promotions which make eating at Osteria a very good value. We suggest going on Tuesdays when the 12 oyster platter is marked down to RMB 199 and we are definitely going back for the massive seafood tower when it’s priced at RMB 399 (from RMB 599) on Wednesdays. It looks like a feast meant for a seafood loving king, or queen. Combine any of the daily deals with happy hour for the win.

PHÉNIX Eatery & Bar

If you haven’t yet been to PHÉNIX, hurry up and treat yo’ self! We actually can’t believe it took us so long to try the stellar dishes at this one Michelin star restaurant. In addition to the top notch food, the environment is simply gorgeous. From the minute you walk into the PuLi Hotel & Spa from Changde Lu, you are immediately drawn into a calm space, perfect for enjoying a leisurely lunch or dinner.

Raw langoustine bone marrow royale with barley, langoustine essence (RMB 140, plus 10% service charge)

This langoustine dish is quite simply a wonderful bowl of food. The fresh baby cousin of the lobster is sweetly succulent and the silky bone marrow royale gives a luxurious dose of umami without overpowering it. Barley provides a necessary bit of crunch. You might get sticker shock seeing the price, but langoustines are highly perishable and must be shipped live daily to restaurants.

Duck neck sausage is carved tableside

The duck sausage is served with a light salad of parsnip, fig and endive

If you are in a group of three or more, you must order the ridiculously good duck neck sausage (RMB 440, plus 10% service charge). It is a truly unique meat main whereby the duck meat has been combined with foie gras for a super rich and slightly gamey sausage treat. From the crispy skin to the juicy meat, we love everything about this dish. The accompanying salad adds just the right touch of brightness. It’s also served with a great parsnip purée as well as super yummy duck jus and fig jam.

After Eight (RMB 95, plus 10% service charge)

Who doesn’t love an After Eight mint after dinner? They do it even better by combining different textures of mint (ice cream, sponge cake, mint leaves) and chocolate (crisp, crumbs) that will end your meal wonderfully.

STYX

We love STYX and all the “stories” they tell through food. In addition to being one of our favorite new restaurants this year, we also find the food to be great value for money. We have never left hungry and always spend a very reasonable amount. Two of the more recent additions to the menu have really impressed us: Chinatown mackerel (RMB 138) and butternut sqush skewer (RMB 16).

Chinatown mackerel (RMB 138)

Butternut squash skewer

Cooking a fatty fish such as mackerel on the grill makes for a completely delicious experience.  We have had it several times now, with large groups of friends and consistently leave a pile of bones behind as the only memory of a meal well had. The grill also does lovely things to a vegetable as sweet as butternut squash, caramelizing bits for a sweet and savory side dish that we can’t get enough of.
