Didi Launches Food Delivery as Meituan Launches Taxis
It’s no longer strange for companies to wade into entirely different industries these days. From Amazon buying Whole Foods to Apple making cars, it’s almost become the norm for tech giants.
And that trend is certainly making its way to China. Taxi app service Didi has indicated that it will be launching a food delivery service in Wuxi soon. Details are scant, but we know the minimum wage for delivery drivers will be RMB 10,000 per month. We also know they’ll be required to work more than 48 hours a week and, strangely enough, drivers are not allowed to have tattoos.
Coincidentally, Meituan appears to be doing the exact opposite. The popular food delivery service will soon be offering a taxi app service in Shanghai, Beijing and five other cities across China. They've been testing the service for the last 10 months in Nanjing and, after several regulatory setbacks, finally appear ready for expansion.
