Check Out RIINK, Shanghai's New Roller Skating Bar

2018-04-25 Ryan ShanghaiWOWeng

RIINK is a new bar that offers booze, food, and roller skating. It’s awesome. The project is the collaborative effort of Ting Ting (Roxie, Inferno), Austin Hu (Diner, Madison Kitchen, 10000 other projects), and Geo Valdivieso (Unico, The Captain). It’s basically the Golden State Warriors of Shanghai bars. It’s the Lebron-era Miami Heat of F&B concepts. It’s too talent-loaded to fail.

The Venue:

RIINK occupies the Dapu Lu space that used to be Inferno (oh, btw, Inferno is closed, but they'll be reopening soon at another location). It’s not the biggest roller rink you’ll ever see, but it’s big enough. They’ve got a small DJ booth in the middle, a stage for live performances on the side, and a fun, retro-future-neon-lights vibe that reminds me of that San Junipero bar from Black Mirror.

The Skating:

You can rent skates for RMB 45-50 per pair for the whole night. They’re brand new, offer super smooth riding, and the wheels even light up when they roll. If your feet are bigger than size 46, you’re screwed for now (bigger sizes will be added in the near future though).

You have to sign a waiver before you skate because, believe it or not, booze + roller skating might = death and destruction. They also have helmets and pads for wusses. If you’ve never skated before you can use the guardrail to sort of pathetically drag yourself around in a circle. Be warned though, there is a gap you’ll need to cross with no guardrail. Good luck there.

We visited early, so it was empty enough to give us free reign to whip around. And whip we did. We’re guessing it would be comfy for up to about 50 people, more than that might be a bit too crowded for high speeds (but still fun).

The Drinks:

The drinks are killer. No surprises there, as the menu was designed by Geo Valdivieso, formerly of Unico. They also have a solid selection of beers.

TikkiRink - Camus VSOP infuse in Cherries, Plantation Pineapple Rum, Lemon Juice, Chocolate & Angostura Bitters, Coconut syrup, Soda Water (RMB 75).

Hot Paloma - Soft Chili Tequila Infusion, Grand Marnier, Lemon Juice, Paloma Grapefruit Soda (RMB 70).

Green Fizz - Vodka, Celery, Celery Bitters, Lemon Juice, Sage / Lemon Grass Syrup, Soda Water (RMB 70).

The Food:

As if this place wasn’t already cool enough, Austin Hu makes the food, I mean, come on. Madison Kitchen, Diner, Union Trading Co., etc.

Homemade Lebanese spiced fries with Lebanese yogurt dip (RMB 48).

Dijon sriracha chicken wing popsicle (RMB 38).

Seafood roll, two soft buns with fresh seafood (RMB 88).

Kale Gouda meatballs with gravy (RMB 58).

You can drop by RIINK for an evening out with some friends, a date, or even solo to get your roll on. They’re also open for bookings, birthday parties and teambuilding events. If you’re interested in booking, contact them on WeChat: 15216695765.
