MUST TRY New Menus for Spring

2018-04-28 ShanghaiWOWeng

As the seasons start to change (in what feels like a blink of an eye), so do our palettes! Here’s what Shanghai’s exciting F&B scene is cooking up for us as of late.

The Ritz-Carlton

Address: 8 Shiji Da Dao, near Lujiazui Huan Lu

Tel: 2020 1717

Hours: Love Pyramid served Saturday and Sunday, 3pm-5pm

From mid-April to June 2018, you can venture up to Scena Italian Restaurant, on the 52nd floor of The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai, Pudong, to indulge on a rather romantic set for two with a new “Love Pyramid” afternoon tea (RMB 498 / set, subject to 15% service charge). Surrounded by stunning scenery on both banks of the Huangpu River, you’ll be taken on a unique experience in collaboration through a number of dice rolls and playing cards that'll have you searching for your next bite.

Each pyramid consists of a delicate selection of eight rich signature chocolates and desserts from Pierre Marcolini and five exquisite savory desserts created by the culinary team of The Ritz-Carlton. The shots of Piquillos were a wonderful combination of smooth, creamy texture combined with the crunch of the zucchini and pepper mix – something we could easily have devoured much more of. But our highlights of the new set have to be the Black Tea and Coconut Martini, which was a refreshingly light cocktail that paired well with the Lobster Mille Feuille topped with a light avocado mousse and vanilla-lime dressing.

Epices & Foie Gras

Address: Room 5, Building A1, 309 Hankou Lu, near Shandong Lu

Tel: 5169 0989

Hours: Daily, lunch 11:30am-2pm; dinner, 6pm-10:30pm

Epices and Foie Gras is also an excellent spot for lunch and dinner if you’re in the area. If you’re not, it’s worth traveling to. It’s an understated French bistro and the food is superb. Two courses of their lunch menu rings in at RMB 128, or RMB 158 for three courses, and you can add a glass of rose for RMB 38. It’s fantastic value for the quality of the food served.

We’d recommend their Thyme and Rosemary Mackerel with Baby Potatoes to start, followed by their Slow Roasted Lamb with Parsley Crust. The lamb is slow cooked and so tender it falls off the bone. It’s light and delicate in flavor, served with a tomato-based couscous and fresh sugar snap peas. The lamb is topped with natural yogurt and a herb crust that perfectly balances the rich flavors of the meaty dish. It’s hearty yet light; the perfect dish for a spring day.

STYX

Address: 199 Hengshan Road, near Yongjia Road

Tel: 021 5401 9356

Hours: Tuesday-Sunday, 11:30am-10pm

STYX draws on the street food experience that many of us have come to love, but have elevated this even further to reimagine their food into edible chapters with “Stories of the Moment”. Serving up a lifetime of culinary travels on skewers, this is where we’re going to be heading for a cozy and relaxed evening with friends.

We couldn’t get enough of the new Moroccan inspired Lamb Skewers with Harissa Broth Vegetables and Cous Cous (RMB 128), or the surprisingly meaty veggie Seitan Sausage & Vegetables (RMB 62). The Salmon Teriyaki with Cold Soba Noodle, Crisp Veggies, and Sesame Sauce (RMB 118) is also a great choice with perfectly cooked salmon that just melts in your mouth. Looking for something a little larger? Gaucho’s Dream (RMB 318) is a combination of slow-cooked Angus beef short rib, beautifully crispy duck fat potatoes, sautéed vegetables, slaw and a slathering of chimichurri. Finish off with happy ending, Smore (RMB 58) – a decadent dessert made with BBQ marshmallows on a bed of crunchy peanut butter crumble and chocolate.

Shake

Address: 3/F, 46 Maoming Nan Lu, near Jinxian Lu

Tel: 021 6230 7175

Hours: Monday-Sunday, 6pm-2am

Shake has always been a destination for fantastic live music, expertly crafted cocktails featuring exotic ingredients and a wide selection of booze options. Now, with their newly launched spring menu, Shake is also a destination for delicious fusion food with a focus on Asian flavors and high-end ingredients to create the perfect bite.

The Honey Cheese Tofu Bruschetta (RMB 78) is more like a spreadable cream cheese and fresh mozzarella combo, with a nutty sweetness that brings everything together. Cold, creamy, and light, this dish is a standout crowd pleaser. For the main event, make sure to order the Smoked Wagyu Beef Tongue with Teriyaki Sauce (RMB 78). Rich, meaty, and delicious, I found myself smothering the perfectly cooked meat cubes through the addicting teriyaki sauce that is beautifully painted on each plate, like a work of art. The tender meat is complemented by the umami crunch of the bonito flakes that garnish the plate.

Wash that all down with some of the best cocktails you can find in Shanghai. We are particularly big fans of the the Sex Bomb!, not only for its name, but also because of the fact that it’s the most inventive play on a Manhattan in the East. Using Gifford French Coffee Liqueur and a few drops of PX Sherry, the drink has a subtle sweetness to it that takes the edge off this stiff cocktail.

What else is around? Well...

La Bota

Address: 18 Maojiayuan Road, near Waimai Lu

Tel: 6318 7815

Hours: Daily, 11:30am-12am

Spanish wine and tapas bar La Bota has announced some exciting new additions to their extensive menu, in the form of grill-fired Spanish skewers! Ranging from Jamon rolled brie and pear with Champagne dressing (RMB 22) and Baby Calamari Skewer with basil pesto (RMB 26) to Pinchos Morunos Traditional Spanish Pork Tenderloin Skewer with a spicy chipotle sauce (RMB 18) - these are set to be an exciting array of flavors to enjoy on their beautiful terrace as we slowly move into the summer months.

Andaz Xintiandi

Address: Andaz Xintiandi, 88 Songshan Lu

Tel: 21 2310 1769

Hours: Lunch set served Monday-Friday, 11:30am-2:30pm

Xuan Bar at Andaz Xintiandi Shanghai is relaunching their popular “Lunch and the City” tray set menu (RMB 88) featuring a variety of dishes for you to mix and match. Great for a little pick-me-up to fuel the rest of your afternoon. Consisting of four courses: starter (soup and salad), main and dessert, dishes range from minestrone vegetable soup and spring BLT salads with a basil mayo dressing to chicken Cordon Bleu with tartare sauce and chilled wontons made with vegetables, shrimp, pork, sesame and peanut paste.

D.O.C Gastronomia Italiana

Address: 5 Dongping Lu, near Yueyang Lu

Tel: 021 6473 9394

Hours: Afternoon Tea served Monday to Friday, 2:30pm-5:30pm

Housed in the beautiful Xuhui area, D.O.C. embraces Italian tradition and nails both fare and ambiance. If it isn’t already, it should be your go-to neighborhood restaurant for Italian fare. Now, they’re introducing an Afternoon Tea set for two (RMB 188) which includes everything from a Brioche Bruschetta with Parma Ham and Parmesan Cheese to Smoked Salmon Ciabatta Panini and traditional scones. What will really take the biscuit though is the homemade Italian favorite, Tiramisu.
