“Thank you so much for being here tonight with your husband. We’re honored to have you here as TIME’s 2024 CEO of the Year. Let me start with a simple question: President Trump is about to take office. Will the new administration be good or bad for the chip industry?”
“Hi Mike, that was a very nice introduction. First of all, thank you so much. This is such an honor to be here and to be among this company. You know, when it comes to the new administration’s impact on the chip industry, the most important thing is certainty. What our industry needs first and foremost is a predictable environment. Since the election ended, I think the entire industry has been anticipating the policy direction for the next four years, and we are optimistic about the outlook.”
“You’ve called AI the most transformational technology of your career. What’s the biggest misconception people have about AI?”
“Let me ask: how many people in the audience use AI every day? That’s pretty good. The misconception is twofold: first, AI is still in its very early stages. Second, although AI is not perfect now, its significance cannot be denied. The development of AI requires a cycle of five to ten years, and we are just getting started.”
“Let’s talk about geopolitics. Most advanced chips are made outside the U.S. When will the most advanced chips be made in America?”
“Five years ago, no one cared where chips were made, but during the pandemic, everyone realized the impact of shortages. The CHIPS Act has accelerated investments in the U.S., and we expect the most advanced chips to be made domestically within three to five years.”
“There are reports that AI is plateauing. Isn’t that bad news for AMD?”
“First of all, I don’t agree. AI’s current performance is just the first wave. There will be faster, stronger supercomputers and applications in the future. Especially in healthcare, AI can accelerate drug discovery, which is exactly where we are working hard.”
“AI consumes a massive amount of energy. Is it hurting the planet?”
“AI does require a lot of energy, but at the same time, AI helps us optimize energy efficiency. For example, AI is helping to make data centers more energy-efficient. While there are challenges, the efficiency improvements and application prospects far outweigh the energy consumption concerns.”
“China recently opened an antitrust investigation into NVIDIA. Are you worried about the geopolitical tensions?”
“Semiconductors have become a core area of national security, especially with high-end chip export restrictions. There is a lot of focus on balancing national security with global trade. It’s important to find a balance while strengthening cooperation between the public and private sectors.”
“Speaking of competition, will AMD ever be bigger than NVIDIA?”
“Competition is a good thing. In this market, there will be multiple winners. For us, it’s more important to develop technologies that truly change the world. We focus on what we can control: innovation and execution.”
