The best things to do this week in Shanghai
The best of the week
Eco Design Fair 2016
Friday 3-Sunday 5 June, Lafayette Arts & Design Centre, 20RMB
Shanghai's premier eco-friendly fair returns with a 'beat the heat' theme at Lafayette Art & Design Centre, opposite Xintiandi Style. This year's event will also feature celebrations for World Environment Day on Sunday 5 June, along with the usual mix of designs, lifestyle products, healthy food and more from local and international environmentally-friendly brands.
Tell Me a Story: Locality and Narrative
Until Sunday 14 August, Rockbund Art Museum, Free
This exquisite group exhibition examines 'life on the borders', displaying the work of 11 artists as they share their experiences from distinct regional cultures in Asia. The new show includes eight photographs capturing the eerie history of the uninhabited Japanese island of Sakhalin, which was seized by Soviet forces following World War II. The exhibition also stops off in Shanghai, exploring the unstable existence of migrant workers anchored to the banks of the Huangpu; the physical boundary between land and water reflecting the political barrier presented to these workers.
Popasuda: Hello Summer
Friday 3 June, DADA, Free
Ahead of his European Tour, DJ Skinny Brown brings Popasuda back to DADA for a night of global dance music. Expect African, Indian, Caribbean and Latin sounds all built for the club and the dancefloor. Skinny also comes with custom made music from all across the world, making his sets exclusively his. Catch him on the decks for the full 8 hours.
Jinshan City Beach International Beer Festival
Wednesday 1-Saturday 11 June, Jinshan City Beach, 10-20RMB (298RMB VIP)
The 2016 Shanghai Jinshan City Beach International Beer Festival is back with a bigger and better beer selection from over 30 brands and hundreds of beers from around the world. To go with the beer, food offerings will include everyone's favourite shaokao, street snacks and the in-season crayfish. Splurge on the VIP tickets (298RMB) and enjoy two imported beers along with German delicacies, Jinshan-select vegetables and imported ice-cream.
Alice Through the Looking Glass
Until Friday 10 June, Cinemas across Shanghai
This follow-up to Tim Burton’s 2010 Alice in Wonderland brings back most of the same team (though Burton has stepped back to be a producer), the same high-energy approach and has Johnny Depp as freaky as ever. Mia Wasikowska returns as the eminently sensible Alice, who has been adventuring on the high seas since we last saw her (a little anachronistically, considering this is the 1800s). Now she must battle male chauvinism to follow her dreams back on dry land.

Losing My Mind
Sunday 5 June, Yuyintang, 50RMB
Parachutes on Fire (watch below) play their final show in Shanghai, going out in a blaze of glory with support from Round Eye, Lifeline, Molemen, GOOOOSE and DJ BO. Siesta will be slinging her Pie Society pies and the Capoeira Mandinga will be bringing some afternoon acrobatics into the mix. Come and spend the afternoon hanging out in YYT, picnic-ing in the park and enjoying some quality local music.
Elsewhere, Beijing-based shoegazery-tinged rockers CAssette make their first visit to Shanghai in years for a show with INXU at Music King on Friday, leading Chinese post-rock outfit Wang Wen release new album Sweet Home, Go! on the same night and internationally renowned jazz guitarist Pat Metheny returns to Shanghai as part of JZ's Summer Night series at Shanghai Concert Hall on Saturday.
