Food news: Pizza in the FFC, blinged out Middle Eastern and more

2016-12-07 Cat Nelson TimeOutShanghai

Well, 2016 was a bit of a downer wasn’t it? We’re glad it’s over and there’s lots to be looking forward this month and in the coming year. So chin up and get psyched, guys.

The team behind Chaozhou-style hot pot favourite Holy Cow have launched a new grilled lamb joint called Holy Smoke near Xuhui Riverside. Like Holy Cow, the focus is first and foremost on quality ingredients. The word is that they’re specially sourcing lamb from Inner Mongolia, and we love a sneaky late-night roadside chuanr even with questionable meat, so we can only imagine.

We dropped by Makan, a new-ish eatery serving up 'Dubai modern fusion cuisine' down an alleyway in Xujiahui. It's one of those expansive menus that covers expected territory like hummus, kebabs and mixed barbecue platters but also throws beef Bolognese pasta and Four Seasons pizza into the mix. We're into the touches of bling throughout (see: teacup above), plus there are belly dancing performances and you can chill out smoking shisha in the evening, if that's your jam.

Pop-up Chinese concept Yang Jing Bang superstar Nat Alexander, who was recognised as one of the city's top food personalities at last week's Love Shanghai Awards, is getting into the wild world of cheese on carbs with Homeslice Pizza, a pizza parlor set to open in the burgeoning Found 158 complex on Julu Lu. It’s a simple premise: New York-style pizza by the slice or pie, beer and a few ‘cocktails with an Italian accent’. Aperol Spritz FTW. With slow-fermented dough and Alexander’s thoughtful approach in the kitchen,Shanghai should be in for something very good.

Over on Changshu Lu near Charlie’s, a new French-style rotisserie (fast-casual and specialising in roasted chicken) called DODU is popping up, with an opening date set for mid-December.

If you’re looking to blow a holiday bonus, The Peninsula launched a ‘culinary journey’ which gives an exclusive tour of its newly Michelin-starred restaurants Yi Long Court and Sir Elly’s – which nabbed three stars between them – and a six-course wine-paired dinner split between the two venues. Seats are 2,500RMB each, plus 16.6 percent, and there’s a four-guest minimum. But YOLO, right? If 2016 has anything to say about it, the world’s probably ending anyways...
