Kick-start a pollution mask that monitors the air around you
Everyone likes breathing, yeah? If you're concerned about air pollution but never know when to wear your mask, or you wear an anti-pollution mask but have no idea if it's actually working or not, the new Smart Cambridge Mask might be the answer. Said to be the world's first smart pollution mask, it works with an app to not only let you know when you should be wearing your mask, but also when you should be changing the filter. What a breath of fresh air...
The mask is said to filter particulate pollutants such as dust and diesel emissions, gas pollutants like petrol fumes and even airborne pathogens such as viruses and bacteria. Whether it can filter coffee is yet to be seen.
According to the team behind the new mask, the Cambridge SmartValve (that thing fitted to the side of the mask) can read the level of pollutants in the air and notify the app on your phone about how polluted the air is, when you should be wearing your mask, and when you should replace the filter.
The brains at Cambridge Mask Co say the app checks air quality using a mix of government and open source data. Taking into account your height, weight, age and gender, it calculates your lung capacity and cross references it with your breathing patterns using the sensors in the SmartValve. Science!
The guys at Cambridge have launched a Kickstarter for the project to help raise funds to bring this project to life. If you are interested in finding out more, long-press and extract or scan the QR Code below.
