Been invited to a wedding recently? Then take note: how much you gift those tying the knot not only reflects your best wishes, but also your grasp of social etiquette. Across China, this blurred line of 'being respectful' or 'not losing face' varies by region.
According to South China Morning Post, the red envelope survey conducted by financial management app Wacai sees Shanghai top the list of most generous wedding guests along with Zhejiang province, with people giving an average hongbao of 1,000RMB.
Brides and grooms in Beijing, Shandong, and Jiangsu provinces receive 800RMB on average, followed by those in Jiangxi who get 600RMB. Guests in the southwest of the country seem to be less generous, handing over an average hongbao of just 200RMB.
So, Shanghai ren, just keep this in mind. After all, it's all about good guanxi at the end of the day.
