2016-11-16 覃梅 英语环球ChinaPlus

这一年的大事

能预见的都结束了

眼见着,又到了盘点的时候

英国的《柯林斯词典》(Collins)率先出手了,在他们的网站上发布了“2016年十大热词”。其中,“英国脱欧”名列第一。

"Brexit' has been named Collins Word of the Year 2016 thanks to a dramatic increase in usage. Here's the words that made the top 10 list:

Brexit
The withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union

英国脱欧: 6月24日英国公投结果显示:52%的公民支持脱欧,英国宣布退出欧盟,英国首相随即辞去国家首相职位。

Following an advisory referendum held in June 2016, 52% of votes were cast in favour of leaving the EU. "Brexit" is a portmanteau of the words Britain and exit

引用英国《卫报》的评论:

“‘Brexit’ is arguably politics’s most important contribution to the English language in over 40 years, since the Watergate scandal gave commentators and comedians the suffix ‘-gate’ to make any incident or scandal infinitely more compelling.”

所以, Brexit是当之无愧的第一热词。

Hygge
A concept, originating in Denmark, of creating cosy and convivial atmospheres that promote wellbeing

安逸舒适:Hygge是丹麦人的一种生活方式,用来形容所有一切舒适的感觉和温馨的气氛。

The Danish word, pronounced "hoo-ga", is usually translated into English as "cosiness"(['kəʊzɪnəs] 舒适;安逸).

想象一下这些画面:

Sitting by the fire on a cold night, wearing a woolly jumper, while drinking mulled wine and stroking a dog - probably surrounded by candles. That's definitely "hygge".

和爱的人一起窝在沙发里,看着喜欢的电视节目,聊着喜欢的话题,不时喝一口暖暖的热巧克力,看看窗外的飘雪。简直太Hygge!

mic drop
A theatrical gesture in which a person drops (or imitates the action of dropping) a hand-held microphone to the ground as the finale to a speech or performance

2016美国白宫记者协会晚宴

(And with that I just have two more words to say: Obama out!)

扔话筒:为了“吸睛”,各种花式秀法轮番上阵。以前是舞台表演完了砸吉他,如今可以扔麦克风啊。不仅歌坛喜欢这样玩儿,如今的政坛人物也不介意这样......

Trumpism
(1) the policies advocated by the US politician Donald Trump, especially those involving a rejection of the current political  establishment and the vigorous pursuit of American national interests
(2) a controversial or outrageous statement attributed to Donald Trump

川普主义:新当选的美国下一任总统特朗普一直是个饱受争议的人物,各种政策主张和奇葩言论确实需要一个词来概括,即 “川普主义”。

往期回顾:美国大选热词一   美国大选热词二

throw shade
To make a public show of contempt for someone or something, often in a subtle or non-verbal manner

看Rihanna的小眼神

公然蔑视:虽然不是恶语相向,但细微处依然能看出一个人的敌意。如果在公开场合表明对某人或某物的厌恶就可以用上这个词了。

Eg.

She wasn't the only woman who threw shade at his performance.

sharenting
The habitual use of social media to share news, images, etc of one’s children

晒娃党:“秀娃”是一种习惯,晒娃党每天都要在社交圈里向朋友们报告TA孩子的吃喝拉撒,展示宝贝是何等可爱。(哪知你在乎的人并非别人也在乎...)

Combination of two words; parenting and sharing. Some parents share too much of their children's information, pictures and private moments online.

snowflake generation
The young adults of the 2010s, viewed as being less resilient and more prone to taking offence than previous generations

雪花代:这是不容冒犯的年轻一代。对于不同观点,他们会变得情绪异常,容易激动发怒,不能控制自己。(新生代被打上这样的标签,这何尝不是对他们的冒犯啊)

The group of young people today that have the INSANE belief they have the right to NOT be offended by any of the beliefs/viewpoints of the other 7.1 billion people of this planet. When these fragile/infantile people are offended, most likely they will react in someway like a toddler (cry, scream, act hysterical, etc).

dude food
Junk food such as hot dogs, burgers, etc considered particularly appealing to men

纯爷们食物:dude一词起源于英国,指的是衣着过于光鲜亮丽的人物,所以词典里面经常翻译成“花花公子”。但用到现在,已经成为世界通用的称呼词了,泛指男人,就是中文里“哥们”、“家伙”。dude喜欢的食物指的是热狗,汉堡...这类垃圾食品。

Uberization
The adoption of a business model in which services are offered on demand through direct contact between a customer and supplier, usually via mobile technology

优步化:优步(Uber)是大家熟知的打车软件,加上后缀,指的是一种通过移动技术,建立服务者和用户直接联系的商业模式。

This craze around Uber and the keys of its success led to the creation of a buzzword: ‘Uberization’.

JOMO
Joy of missing out: pleasure gained from enjoying one’s current activities without worrying that other people are having more fun

You’re enjoying what you’re doing in the here and now and not on social media broadcasting or seeing what everybody else is doing.
