China, Djibouti agree to establish strategic partnership


China and Djibouti have agreed to establish strategic partnership to strengthen cooperation.


The announcement came as Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks with Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday.


The Chinese leader has called on both sides to maintain high-level exchanges and expand cooperation between governments, legislative institutions, and political parties.


Guelleh says his country appreciates China's active engagement in UN peacekeeping and international anti-piracy efforts, thanking China for its role in maintaining world peace and prosperity.


The two countries signed deals on economic, technological and agricultural cooperation after the talks.


Chinese premier stresses craftsmanship


The Chinese Premier has highlighted the importance of skilled workers and craftsmanship for China to realize quality development.


Li Keqiang made the remarks during a meeting with workers who participated in this year's WorldSkills Competition in October, winning the most medals and points among 68 countries and regions.


Premier Li said that young skilled workers are "irreplaceable" in pushing manufacturing and service sectors to a higher level and in realizing quality economic development.


With an average age of less than 21 years, the 52 Chinese participants won 15 gold, seven silver and eight bronze medals.


Chinese air force patrol South China Sea


The PLA air force has conducted a combat air patrol over the South China Sea.


Military spokesperson Shen Jinke says a team of various bombers completed the routine patrol.


Chinese bombers also conducted training exercises after passing over the Bashi Channel and Miyako Strait.


Shen adds the H-6K bombers took off from an inland airport in northern China.


The Chinese air force started regular high seas training in 2015.


Sound heard in Argentine sub search comes from explosion


Argentina's navy announced that a sound detected during the search for a missing submarine likely came from an explosion.


A Navy spokesman said the search will continue until there is full certainty about the fate of the ARA San Juan.


He said evidence showed an anomalous event was consistent with an explosion.


US and specialist agencies said the "hydro-acoustic anomaly" was produced just hours after the navy lost contact with the submarine on November 15.


The sub was originally scheduled to arrive on Monday at the Mar del Plata Navy Base, about 400 kilometres southeast of Buenos Aires.


Myanmar, Bangladesh sign agreement on Rohingya refugees


Myanmar and Bangladesh signed an agreement on Thursday covering the return of Rohingya people who fled across the border to escape violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state.


Myanmar announced the agreement but provided no details on how many Rohingya refugees would be allowed to return home.


Bangladesh said the repatriations are to begin within two months.


The office of Myanmar civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi said the agreement follows a formula set in a 1992 repatriation agreement signed by the two nations after an earlier spasm of violence.


Libyan navy rescues 450 migrants off western Libyan coast


The Libyan navy has said its naval forces rescued 450 illegal African immigrants off the coast of the capital Tripoli.


A Navy spokesman said the migrants have now been transferred to the Anti-Illegal Immigration Department in Tripoli to be transferred to housing shelters.


Due to the insecurity and chaos in Libya, thousands of migrants choose use the country to cross the Mediterranean towards European shores.


Immigrants who are rescued by the Libyan navy are detained in housing centers with poor living conditions.


Zambia dismisses reports of Mugabe seeking asylum


The Zambian government has dismissed reports that former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is seeking asylum in Zambia.


There have been reports on social media that the 93-year-old former Zimbabwean leader was contemplating seeking asylum in Zambia after his 37-year rule came to an end.


Zambia's foreign minister Harry Kalaba says Mugabe has not approached the Zambian government to seek asylum, adding that the reports should be treated as mere speculation.

China to build Xiong'an into green area


China has finished compiling an environmental protection plan for the Xiong’an New Area in Hebei Province, with an aim of building it into a modern green zone.


The plan will be based on the environmental protection of Baiyangdian, the largest fresh water lake in north China and an important part of Xiong’an.


China announced in April the decision to set up Xiong’an New Area, the third new area of national significance after the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and the Shanghai Pudong New Area.


China releases panda pair into wild


A pair of giant pandas, a male and a female, were released into the wild on Thursday as part of a program to rebuild the wild panda population.


In light snow on Thursday morning, the pair born in 2015 were released into Liziping Nature Reserve in Sichuan Province.

In October last year, two female pandas, also both bred in captivity, were released into the reserve.
