In case you missed it: May 2023
Here is your month in review
We kicked off May with Science Week. Our teachers planned an action-packed four-day programme for the entire College. In addition to specially themed lessons throughout the week, pupils took part in a wide variety of activities. They learned about the cosmos in our very own Wellington planetarium. They explored the internal anatomy of the frog. They learned about the science of slime and bubbles, how to extract DNA and how rockets work. They conjured up a snowstorm in a boiling flask. They even modified a spin bike to charge their electronic devices. The week finally concluded with an exhibition of pupils’ work and an awards ceremony.
Our librarian, Pippa Jacobi and our language pathway coordinator, Catherina Fasanmi-Jones paid a visit to Luodi Primary School in Sha’anxi Province as part of The Library Project. This charitable organisation donates books and libraries to underfinanced schools and orphanages in China and Vietnam. Wellington has been a close partner with The Library Project since 2016, having donated more than RMB 388,000 over the years. Ms Jacobi and Ms Fasanmi-Jones were treated to performances of song and dance. Their hosts took them on a tour of the school’s classrooms and they helped them decorate their reading corners by playing a fun drawing game. Yet another example of our Wellington Value of Kindness in action.
·
The entire Wellington College China Family held its first-ever Wellington Games. This inter-school competition, hosted at our sister school, Huili Nantong, brought together year 6 pupils from all Wellington and Huili schools in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Tianjin and Nantong. Pupils participated in a series of events such as football, balloon volleyball, unihoc, tag rugby and bench ball. The games showcased the talent and dedication of our pupils while fostering a spirit of healthy competition and sportsmanship. More importantly, the event was an opportunity to make lasting memories and celebrate the strong sense of community and shared identity that characterises the Wellington College China Family.
Superhero Sports Day
On 10 and 11 May, our pupils in years 3 and 4 discovered their superpowers with our first-ever Superhero Sports Day. Children suited up in their superhero capes and put their strength, endurance, skills and dexterity to the test in a day full of action-packed events like Captain America ultimate frisbee, The Flash lightning sprint, The Mighty Thor throw and Human Torch hurdles. A super fun time was had by all.
FOW Summer Festival
On 13 May, for the first time since 2021, Wellington pupils, parents, teachers and staff came together for a day of fun in the sun at our seventh Summer Festival. Organised by the Friends of Wellington, the circus came to town this year. There were clowns on stilts, balloon animal makers, a magician and face painters. Festivalgoers enjoyed a market full of vendors and delighted in an array of delicious treats. Meanwhile, Wellingtonians showcased their talents on stage, tested their skills with games like ‘dunk the teacher’ and let loose our bouncy castles and ball pits. The day was also an opportunity to put the Wellington Value of Kindness into practice. Our pupils raised nearly RMB 18,000 for selected Wellington charities.
James
Our Lower Prep pupils put on a spectacular production of James. These young actors brought the beloved characters of this classic to life with energy and enthusiasm. The cast delivered unforgettable performances. Colourful costumes and imaginative set design transported the audience while the catchy musical numbers performed by our pupils had everyone tapping their feet. The show was a true testament to the talent, commitment and courage of our Lower Prep performers.
Great British Day Out
Friday 26 May was our eighth annual Speech Day. It was a time for our 2023 Leavers to celebrate challenges met, achievements unlocked, friendships forged, memories made and all the great life experiences on the horizon. Our teachers, parents and family members joined in to honour this class of talented young men and women as they crossed the threshold to officially become Old Wellingtonians. Congratulations, Wellington’s Class of 2023! We know you will make us all proud by going out into the world and doing amazing things!
