Who’s on shift: Guest bartenders in China this August

Hot off a pop-up tour across the USA in a yellow 1977 Volkswagen bus, Faye Chen (formerly of Speak Low, Shanghai) and business partner GN Chan (formerly of Angel’s Share, New York) cross continents with their quirky mobile concept for a two-day pop-up at Scandal in Beijing. Centred around “deconstructing and redefining” food and drink as we know it, the menu will feature cocktails like French Toast Flip – barley tea-infused vodka, milk, maple toast, whole egg and sea salt; Waldorf Salad – whisky, apple juice, celery juice, ginger ale, walnut bitters; and Century Egg’s Soy Mate – tequila, soy milk, oolong tea, coconut water, ginger juice, anise, lemon, cinnamon and century egg. During their visit, the two will also split off for solo guest shifts around China.

Part of an effort between several celebrated Shanghai bartenders to help bring some new life to smaller cocktail scenes across China, Eddy Yang will head west to Yunnan for a guest shift of bespoke cocktails and a few signatures at Kunming’s Enigma. Later in the month, he’ll serve drinks like the Crete Lace – brandy, Branca Menta, coconut vinegar reduction, peach syrup, mint and ginger ale – at Ten Cafe in Guangzhou. Look out for more shifts come September.

Materialising from Taiwan’s super-secretly located PUN, an intimate cocktail bar hidden away in Daan District, Kero Song is hopping over to the Mainland for one-day guest shifts in Nantong, Changshu and Suzhou.

The World’s Best Bar American Bar is pairing up with EQUIS social lounge for a two-day guest shift and two masterclass sessions at Four Seasons Hotel Beijing. The guest shifts will be led by the team’s Bar Supervisor Alice Glayzer alongside Senior Bartender Phillippa Guy. The ladies will also host masterclasses on Thursday and Friday with the first being dedicated to women in the industry, and the second open to everyone.

When: August 23 (Masterclass – open only to females in the industry), 3-5pm

Tippling Club's infamous edible cocktail menu “Dreams & Desires” is coming to Hong Kong’s Fang Fang. The menu will have a selection of four gummy bears that represent the four selected cocktails. Choose from Happiness – tequila, yuzu, honey and orange flower water, matched with a lemon and honey gummy bear, Lust – champagne, peach, cocoa and tonka bean matched with a Coco Chanel perfume-flavoured gummy bear, Indulgence – strawberry, bourbon and Peychaud’s bitters with a chocolate and strawberry gummy bear and Super Car – gin, truffle, chardonnay and lemon juice, matched with gummy bear flavoured with petrol, leather and metal.

When: August 29, 8pm-midnight.
