SFS新研究中心揭牌仪式系列报道|Excerpts from the Testimonials
Below are excerpts from the testimonials provided by the members of the Advisory Boards of the two centres. In these statements, the distinguished scholars supporting and endorsing the foundation of the centres comment as follows.
Barbara M. Benedict
Charles A. Dana Professor of English Literature, Trinity College Hartford, USA
The SUFE Center for the Study of Text and Print Culture at Shanghai University for Finance and Economics will be a wonderful resource. It will provide scholars of book history and literary and cultural studies an international, centralized location for the exchange of ideas, and it finds in Distinguished Professor Sandro Jung a director both innovative and experienced …. This is a splendid project to help scholars re-imagine literary texts and contexts, and, indeed, what literature itself really is.
Fiona McIntosh-Varjabédian
Professor of Comparative Literature, University of Lille, France
The European and French community of Comparative Literature considers the Centre for the Study of Text and Print Culture as a great breakthrough for reception studies. Prof. Jung is a very highly esteemed specialist of eighteenth-century image-text studies and of European book history. His innovative approach to the circulation of iconography and of material culture in Europe has changed the most established outlines of literary history. The Centre will also enable a new focus on translation studies since the role of non-canonical adaptations has to be considered on a large period together with more canonical material.
Timothy Erwin
Professor of English, University of Nevada, Las Vegas
The academic community worldwide expects great things from the Centre and salutes our Chinese colleagues on its founding. Prof. Jung is highly regarded among his eighteenth-century cohort as a highly distinguished practitioner of image-text studies. … Through his leadership we can expect major contributions to a new and richer literary history to emerge from the Centre.
Lisa Walters
Senior Lecturer at Liverpool Hope University/University of Queensland
The Centre for the Study of Text and Print Culture is a timely and innovative research initiative that will have international reach and significance. … I am keen to support this Centre since Distinguished Professor Sandro Jung is a world-leading, eminent scholar whose research has been ground-breaking and influential in this field of study. He will be an ideal figure for leading cutting-edge research projects and facilitating international collaborative networks. … The founding of this Centre will increase the visibility and prestige of the University on an international level as it produces innovative research and forges connections with scholars around the world.
Scott Slovic
Honorary Director, University Distinguished Professor of Environmental Humanities, University of Idaho, USA
Gary Snyder Studies, to me, means not only the study of Gary Snyder himself, but the study of the broad assemblage of artistic, ecological, and social interests Snyder’s work has always demonstrated. Congratulations on the creation of this ambitious new center at Shanghai University of Finance and Economics. I wish you all the best, and I will do everything I can to support your efforts!
Patrick D. Murphy
Honorary Director, Professor Emeritus of English, University of Central Florida, USA
Greetings and congratulations on the establishment of SUFE Centre for Text and Print Culture and the Center for Gary Snyder Studies! I’m confident that both are producing impressive research that would attract the attention of international scholars around the world. It is no doubt that you will produce important, valuable scholarship around cultural and literary issues by looking at Gary Snyder, and also by looking at the importance of printed text in our cultures in the way they work. I wish you every success and hope that there are some small ways that I would be able to contribute going forward in the future.
Mark Gonnerman
Mellon Humanities Program Professor, Foothill College, California, USA
Congratulations for Professor Tan for reestablishing the Center for Gary Snyder Studies at SUFE in the international city of Shanghai. I am honored to be asked to serve the Advisory Board and I will do whatever I can to help build this community on behalf of more ecological ways of life throughout the world. It is hoped that the Center for Gary Snyder Studies will continue to bring people together from all directions so that the generations coming up will know that in our time there are elders who do care about their quality of life and our collective future.
Stephen Roddy
