拾荒跑步,最新潮的运动了解一下 | 'Plogging', the Swedish craze, is coming

CD君 CHINADAILY 2020-08-26

You must have heard about jogging as a popular way of keeping fit, but what about plogging?

Plogging is a combination of jogging and picking up litter, transliterated from the Swedish phrase "plocka upp".

It started as an organized activity in Sweden around 2016 and then gradually spread to other countries.

As a workout, plogging is more efficient than simply running, because it provides variation in body movements by adding bending, squatting and stretching.

Hailed as 2018's hottest fitness trend, plogging has grown in popularity in more than 40 countries, from the US to France and Australia to Thailand.

The idea of plogging is to focus on environmental protection as well as physical health — to care for Mother Nature as well as your body.

Have you spotted people out jogging while toting trash bags recently? Or running along with hands full of discarded plastic bottles?

You might do soon! Because plogging has reached China.

Olivier, a Frenchman married to a Chinese girl, began promoting plogging in Huizhou, Guangdong province, back in April.

He and his wife were the only ones doing it at first, he said, but the craze soon caught on.

The couple have set up a WeChat group for people to learn more about plogging.

Currently there are more than 100 people from different parts of the country in the group, promoting the burgeoning environmental movement.

In honor of World Environment Day this year, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China launched plogging campaigns in 280 cities, attracting some 13,000 participants.

On June 3, dozens of volunteers jogged around Beijing Olympic Green and Olympic Forest Park picking up garbage, attracting the attention of passersby as they went.

Then, Chinese singer Tan Weiwei posted several photos to her Weibo account showing her picking up litter and encouraging others to start plogging.

Students at Tsinghua University are also getting involved, with the college's "morning run team" launching an activity called Plogging China that aims to entice more young people to give the new sport a try.

Plogging is eco-friendly, can be done almost anytime and anywhere, and costs next to nothing. Will you take it up?

Plogging is not the only example of social actions from foreign countries influencing China.

The Ice Bucket Challenge — in which participants dumped buckets filled with ice and water over their heads — was used to encourage people to raise awareness about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and donate to the cause.

More recently, the Lemon Face Challenge is a fun and engaging way to draw everyone's attention to the incurable Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas (DIPG), a terminal form of brain tumor that most commonly affects children between five and nine years of age.
