Cindy Y. Admitted into CalArts

California Institute of the Arts

例如尽早开始专业准备,最好从12年级开始就制作美术作品集;

利用周末或暑假时间去认识更多在美术专业领域有成就的人,并向他们学习;

Cindy Y. is a Year 13 student at Dulwich International High School Zhuhai. She already received six American art universities offers, including her dream university, California Institute of the Arts – animation major. With this offer, she is stepping closer to her dream of being a Disney animator.

California Institute of the Arts

Established in 1961 by Walt and Roy Disney and with animation major ranking top in the world,  it is home to many Walt Disney Animation Studios animators.

Crowned the “Harvard Business School of Animation” by the Los Angeles Times, California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) has produced hundreds of successful alumni who have generated billions at the box office worldwide. The school lists Mark Andrews (director and screenwriter of Pixar’s Oscar winning animated feature Brave), Eric Darnell (co-director of Antz, Madagascar, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted, Mark Osborne (director of Kung Fu Panda) and none other than Tim Burton among its most famous alumni.

When Cindy was three or four years old she liked to watch Disney and dreamed of making animations for others to enjoy. With the support of her family, Cindy began to draw from an early age. During her a vacation, she went to the United States alone for a summer school attending School of Visual Arts (SVA). This experience inspired her further.

Before joining Dulwich International High School Zhuhai(DHZH), Cindy planned to attend a high school in California. However, a family friend recommended DHZH to her instead after a visit. After finding out more about DHZH, it was decided that Cindy would come to DHZH for her High School education before going abroad for her University study.

When asked if there was any ups and downs in High School life in DHZH, Cindy said: "Although I have clear goals and the enthusiasm for art, I can’t say my study and life in here is always easy. When I first entered DHZH and committed myself into western way of study, I felt everything was new and full of surprise. The experience here was quite different from my Secondary School. There are lots of activities waiting for the Year 10 and Year 11 students, so I played a very active part in attending events back then. However, when I became a Year 12 student, I found out that I should focus more on academic studies and preparing for the university application process. Life was stressful when I saw most of my classmates were working harder and achieving progress in study, I felt very anxious.

At that time, I took the initiative to consult with my teacher and tell her about my difficulties. The Director, Deputy Director, my teacher and my family sat together with me and discussed how to solve my problem. We optimized my study timetable according to my situation, and I felt a great release immediately as I regained control of my life and study.

During the interview, Cindy also shared with us impressions of teachers: “my Art teacher – she always has her own unique ideas and often encourages us to create freely, so I like to stay in the art room to draw when I have time; my Math teacher - I have a weak foundation in mathematics, but he never gave up on me. I feel very touched for he has always been there to help me; my Geography teacher - he was an interesting man and his classes were always full of laughter.

Cindy also shared the experiences that might have helped her get the offer of CalArts:" I made an animated cartoon, of which each template was engraved on an acrylic board first and then painted with ink and pressed on the paper to make a picture.  I had spent more than 20 minutes on each template and altogether I made 300 pieces. The process took me about 3 months, every day from 2:00pm till midnight. Although tiring, the process made me happy. I felt ups and downs as the story developed during the process, and I hope my audience could feel the same way too. Maybe it was this unique way of making animation and my insistence that persuaded the admission officer of CalArts.”

When reviewing student candidates’ application, the admission officers of top universities will not only have high requirements for students’ academic performance and professional skills, but also will pay great attention to the students' experience in co-curricular activities.

For Cindy, she thinks she benefits from the Dulwich Diversity program, which is a series of events that brings world-class practitioners from the visual and performing arts to facilitate workshops and master classes at Dulwich International High Schools and Colleges.

By participating in the international events on behalf of the school, she got the opportunity to meet, work with or compete with other students from all over the country, Asia and the world. When asked what her most impressive event was, Cindy told us that it was the time she joined the Model United Nations Competition: “I just felt so surprised when seeing so many excellent students acting as different representatives for other countries and standing to speak for that country.”

At the end of the interview, Cindy also shared some of her own reflections of study and preparation for university application , hoping to help DHZH’s  younger brothers and sisters that have the same dream:

Start to prepare the art portfolio as early as possible(like Year 12); make use of weekend and summer vacation to meet more people with achievements in the field of arts and learn from them; spend more time on weak subjects in Year 10 and 11,  so as not to feel anxious about those subjects when applying for university in Year 13.

Cindy's success in receiving her dream offer is inseparable from her parents’ support and encouragement.  We also had an interview with Cindy's father and he would like to share his thought:

"I really see the progress that Cindy has made at DHZH.  The platform and opportunities that DHZH provides prove that there is no need for parents to send their children abroad for International High School education.

I also think that having a dream is very important for a child. Cindy's motivation comes from the dream of making animations to bring people happiness.  In pursuing her dream, she is always willing to keep trying.

What’s more, having a role model who is someone you know is a very inspiring thing.  The DHZH alumni always encourage students when they returned to school. I hope after graduation, Cindy can often visit DHZH during her vacation in the future.

Finally, I would like to thank DHZH’s Director, Deputy Directors and teachers for their hard work. ”

Cindy shows us a story of dream pursuing and we wish that her dream of being a Disney animator  comes true after her university graduation. We also hope that someday we can watch a Disney film with Cindy’s name on the credits in the movie theater. We believe that will be a wonderful moment of a “dream come true”.
