主讲人简介

Danyang Chen is a Ph.D. candidate in strategy at the NUS business school. Her research lies at the intersection of entrepreneurship, family business, and social capital, with an emphasis on understanding how the social capital embedded in different social networks and institutional environments distinguishes family businesses and entrepreneurs and impacts their strategy and firm value. Her dissertation research seeks to explore how kinship networks and political connections fashion family firms’ engagement in financial misconduct and accordingly guide markets’ reaction to the misconduct. She has several ongoing projects studying how social networks play in entrepreneurial activities such as serial entrepreneurship and team innovation; and how play in corporate non-market strategies like succession in the family business and corporate political activation strategies.

讲座摘要

This study focuses on controlling families’ social networks, discusses their relations with their lineage groups, and examines the influence of such social relations on corporate misconduct. We theorize that leaders grounded in lineage-based networks are motivated to prioritize family social and economic wealth in decision-making to the detriment of other stakeholders. Testing our theory in the context of Chinese clans, typical lineage communities preserved in China, we find that family firms with the strong clan background exhibit a Janus-faced strategy that borders on financial misconduct, to satisfy the controlling family’s economic interests while simultaneously to protect the firm’s reputation.
