EAT: World Vegan Month, Q Mex Brunch, and More
Obentos have released their new winter menu, featuring plenty of healthy dishes that are nevertheless warming enough for winter. The dishes include new shared plates, salads, grain bowls, and bentos but, in particular, we've got our eyes on the teriyaki salmon ochazuke seasonal bento (pictured in lead blog image), featuring grilled teriyaki salmon on a bed of brown rice topped with steaming hot matcha dashi soup, and the seasonal poke bowl, including fresh marinated sashimi salmon on mixed grains with a wasabi-avocado dip, pickled cucumber and radish, fresh red cabbage, seaweed, shiso leaf, and poke dressing (can you tell we like salmon here at the EAT column?).
Whether you are vegan or just want to find out more about veganism, join the World Vegan Month special event organized by Towards a Compassionate Nation this Saturday, Nov 11. In addition to a Chinese-style vegan buffet dinner by Belencre restaurant, you'll get to enjoy talks by four international speakers: Doris Lee, ProVeg International Outreach Coordinator, Duanduan Xie, lead of Wild Aid China's Shushi Program, Jessika Ava, Farm USA International Programs Director, and Rosana Ng, The Pollination Project Country Program Coordinator. During their talks, you'll learn about healthy living, farm animal sanctuaries, the effect of veganism on the environment and find out about volunteer opportunities with local animal shelters. Mark your calendars (and get your bookings in) for Hatchery's latest long table dinner. For one night only on Tuesday, Nov 14, award-winning author and New Zealand's leading food personality, Annabel Langbein, will host a dinner at Hatchery as part of 2017 New Zealand Week. Annabel is known for her TV series, The Free Range Cook, and has authored more than 25 cookbooks. Annabel will be cooking a four-course menu that showcases the best of New Zealand produce, flavors, and new world cuisine through a family-style feast. Finally, Q Mex has unveiled their new Taqueria brunch menu, kicking off this Saturday (Nov 11) and available every weekend between 11am-4pm. The menu includes items like chorizo eggs Benedict (RMB 75), brunch tamale (RMB 80), and chorizo con huevos tacos (RMB 70). Then, undo all that hard eating work with a three-hour free-flow on margaritas, sangrias, mimosas, and sparkling wine for RMB 188, or a hangover-dominating bloody Maria pitcher for RMB 268. Sounds like the best (or the worst) thing to have happened to weekends for a while.
