Booze News: Get Sozzled With Your Loved One This Valentine's

Tom A. theBeijinger 2019-05-29

Feeling thirsty? Whet your whistle with Booze News, our weekly wrap-up of the week's best bar deals, parties, drink concoctions, industry gossip, and more.

Drinking oodles of beer with your beau
First things first, Valentine's Day is tomorrow, and that means you're either planning to seize the opportunity to awkwardly
dine among the millions of other couples in the city or you're at home being all cool like. Luckily for the beer lovers among us, breweries haven't forgotten to mark the occasion as well.

Jing-A, for one, has prepared a special love platter and beer pairing for RMB 188. That'll get you three courses including a barbecue platter, a side, and a pie in a jar, as well as a flight of four beers. Read: you'll likely be rolling home, not rolling under the sheets.

They'll also launch two new brews on tap on Thursday, which are sure to leave you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside regardless of your romantic status. The first is the cheekily titled What about Mi? (6 percent ABV), a sparkling sour mijiu (glutinous rice wine) fermented with a blend of brewer's yeast, wild yeast, and bacteria, and aged on mulberries and jujube dates for three months. This one's light-bodied, smooth, juicy, and tart, and subsides with a sparkling finish. The second, the Guizhou Smoked Chili Porter (6.4 percent ABV) is a beefy, spicy, and fruity blend of notes courtesy of beechwood-smoked malt and dried chili peppers sourced from Guizhou. Fiery.

Arrow Factory, on the other hand, have skipped grub deals and opted for an all-day happy hour so that you can longingly gaze into your lover's eyes until you can gaze no more. That, or you can just get sloshed with your mates.

Alternatively, Little Creatures invite the spare wheels among us to "fall in love again," presumably with a potentially frisky evening with your friends – play that game at your peril. Anyone who turns up in a group of three or five will get a free round of drinks with purchase of food. Kinky.

Finally, Slow Boat celebrate this Valentine's Day with an all-day deal on their fittingly ruby-red La Mei Saision for RMB 25. After a few of those, it'll at least look like you've been smooching.

Drink oodles of wine with your beau instead

Celebrate an early Valentine's Day in style this Wednesday (Feb 13, or alternatively, Feb 20) with Wine Day at Hulu, who is offering a set menu of sharing dishes accompanied by four Italian wines (two white and two red) for RMB 298 plus RMB 100 for free-flow wine. It might be best to call upon some of your friends for this one as we've heard the food comes thick and fast while the wine cascades around you.
