Mandarin Monday is a weekly column where we help you improve your Chinese by detailing learning tips, fun and practical phrases, and trends.

The death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man, at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 25 has sparked mass outrage and protests in the US. Activists across the country have promised to march for 14 consecutive days demanding an end to police brutality and structural overhauls within the police and justice systems as a means of tackling ingrained and systemic racism.

Since then, calls for racial justice have spread well beyond the US, with demonstrations cropping up in cities throughout Australia, Britain, Germany, France, and elsewhere.

On Tuesday, Jun 2, millions of social media users – particularly on Instagram – posted black squares and refrained from other online activity as part of #BlackOutTuesday, a campaign in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. Although the efficacy and motivation behind the effort was criticized by some (evidence that white and other non-black communities still have a long way to go in learning about allyship), Chinese-American activist Michelle Lin took to Instagram to list "Chinese terminology for addressing 'anti-blackness'," highlighting words and the correct phraseology when addressing topics of race. Inspired by her post, we decided to republish it in full with a couple of additions.

In support of the Black Lives Matter movement, activist Michelle Lin posted this list of affiliated terms in Chinese

In order for meaningful change to take place – globally and personally – and to support folks who are routinely discriminated against, it's important that we educate ourselves, face these problems head-on, and don't shy away from engaging in difficult conversations that make us uncomfortable.
