Craving freshness? For Beijingers, there's always something New in the Neighborhood.

Craving freshness? For Beijingers, there's always something New in the Neighborhood.

If you, like us, work in the Sanlitun area, then you too may constantly be in search of new affordable waimai options to keep things interesting. Answering that call, Tatanova has just opened up on the first floor Zhongqing Plaza, right across from Subway – as if to say to those big brand buffoons, “This is how affordable to-go sandwiches are done!”

While most of your orders will likely be delivery, if you do stop by their little shop, the friendly staff will be happy to inform you that their most popular options are the braised beef (RMB 45), the vanilla-grilled chicken (RMB 38), and the Italian-style shrimp (RMB 42). We tried the beef with the spicy sauce on the side and can attest to the freshness of the filling.

The sandwiches are between a sliced, flat loaf and come out piping hot. The plain bread is standard, but for RMB 3 extra, you can upgrade to the grains and seeds bun, the chive bun, or the black and white sesame seed bun.

For the first couple of weeks of their opening, they’re also offering 15 percent off all orders.

For Dinner: Yuncui Yunnan Cuisine

Yunnan restaurants are already found all about town, but the province’s cuisine is so diverse that each one can bring something new to the table – and Yuncui in particular declares on their menu cover that they are “not the same” as other Yunnan restaurants.

For Yuncui, the main draw are its pot dishes, namely the pot of steamed chicken (RMB 98) with matsutake and the “meal pot” (RMB 168), a traditional-looking hot pot with various meats in a white soup. Other inspiring dishes include the Pu’er tea shrimp (RMB 88), served with the leaves they’re cooked with.

For Drinks: A spot of red or white at Trio Wine Bar

Giving an outlet to wine lovers looking for a new spot to sip with friends, Trio is a wine bar with space enough to host a small party. It’s tastefully decorated with wine-themed wall hangings and, and lights are kept low for just the right atmosphere at night.

Bottles are clearly marked wit prices using white paint for those seeking a whole one (for here or to go!) but best of all, the offer a wide selection of wine by the glass at any given time, with prices ranging from RMB 50-480 on their chalkboard wine menu.
