Last month we reported that it seemed as if Dunkin’ Donuts was leaving Beijing for good. Now it’s official: with Jollibee Foods Corp. saying they’d be discontinuing business in Beijing.

According to a Nov 9 report in GMA News Online (https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/money/companies/850821/jollibee-discontinues-dunkin-business-in-beijing/story/), Jollibee, who had a franchise agreement with Dunkin’ Donuts via subsidiary Jollibee Worldwide Pte. Ltd., said the agreement for Dunkin’ shops running in certain territories in the Chinese mainland, as well as in Hong Kong and Macao, has been terminated.

It began with all Dunkin' Dianping listings for Beijing disappearing

The franchise agreement was entered into on Jan 5, 2015 between Singapore-based Golden Cup Pte. Ltd. (a company that, until it was closed following this announcement, was owned by Jollibee Worldwide) and Dunkin’ Donuts Franchising LLC to open new restaurants in certain territories, including seven shops in Beijing.

This is now the second time Dunkin’ has tried and failed to make it in the Chinese capital, with their first attempt having taken place in the late '90s (https://www.thebeijinger.com/blog/2014/02/27/fast-food-watch-five-popular-food-franchises-failed-beijing).

Dunkin’ did make a return to Beijing in 2016 following the franchise agreement with Jollibee, and we were more than happy to try their 18 doughnut varieties following their return to the capital.

In their official statement, Jollibee have said they will “focus on building [their] business in China through its larger businesses there,” but it looks as if this focus will no longer include a third attempt to break into the Beijing market.
