The following is an experiment using Bing AI to draft an article about our 2023 Readers’ Survey. It didn't go all too well.

Once upon a time, in the bustling city of Beijing, there was an online publication called the Beijinger. It was great, full of interesting articles and useful information. But one day, the editors realized that they were too lazy to write a story encouraging readers to fill out their first reader survey in years. "Oh no!" they cried. "What will we do?"

So they asked Bing to write it for them.

The survey asked readers about their demographics, social media habits, and what they would like to see more and less coverage of in their channels. They created a QR code for people to access the survey:

And so it was decided. They would give away 100 tickets to their Hot & Spicy Festival, a case of Great Leap craft beer, and bottles of fancypants wines to random survey respondents.

But still, the editors were worried. "What if no one fills out the survey?" they said.

Not yet a replacement for proper human writing

"Don't worry," said Bing. "I've got this."

It would turn out that Bing AI didn’t, in fact, have this. Also pretty rude of them to call us lazy. Other AI programs weren’t all that great either, with ChatGPT having this to say about our fair city:

Beijing is the capital city of the People's Republic of China, located in the northern part of the country. With a population of over 21 million, it is one of the largest cities in the world. The city has a rich history dating back over 3,000 years and is home to many famous landmarks and tourist attractions.

When asked to elaborate further, we didn't get much in way of an explanation. Suffice to say, we’re not gonna be using any AI to write stories for us anytime soon – be it ChatGPT, Bing AI or whatever other alphabet soup of a name these chat AIs have.

That being said, nobody wants to read a full article telling them to fill out a survey (unless it’s pertinent info about results in our Juicy Burger or Cheesy Pizza Cup, those be important numbers), much less one that tries to drum up how *exciting* it’s going to be clicking a few buttons before hitting “submit.”

So, here’s the lowdown about our 2023 Readers’ Survey:

  • It’ll help us figure out what y’all like and dislike reading

  • It’ll also help us figure out what you want to see more of

  • Plus, it’s nice to see just who is reading our fine publication

  • As well as what your social media habits are so we can bug you on there

That being said, one thing from the Bing AI generated text is true: we will be giving away tickets to the Beijinger's Hot & Spicy Festival, a case of Great Leap craft beer, and bottles of fancypants wines to random survey respondents.

The Beijinger's 2023 Reader Survey will be open for one week, until March 23. The survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. You can access the survey via WeChat by scanning the QR below:

As always, if you have anything you'd like to read or see in the future, don't hesitate to let us know in the comments or email us at editor@thebeijinger.com.
