JEAN-MARIE FIORI

Jean-Marie FIORI (b.1952) is a french artist who lives and works in Paris. With an early focus on fresco and decorative arts, Fiori devoted himself to sculpture in the early 1990s, and more recently, distinguished himself with his functional sculptures
The artist has also experimented with varied materials, starting from direct cutting in alabaster and marble to bronze casting and later lacquered bronze and biscuit porcelain.
Fiori's work is also inspired by heritages of the High Antiquity, particularly Mesopotamian Art and Cycladic Minimalism. Associated with Ancient Greek mythologies and fables, Fiori's creations remain true to his essential aesthetic and culture.
A contemporary vision of his highly distinguishable personal style, Fiori's "beasts" are imbued with dignity, but also childlike purity, sincerity, and mischievousness, bringing heartfelt joy to the viewer.

Pierre Dumonteil

The fascinating story of an artist and an art dealer whose paths crossed from a random encounter on a school bench during their high school years in the Limousin lands. The two were destined to join forces twenty-five years later on the Parisian art scene.

—— Pierre Dumonteil

Perhaps it was fate that Jean-Marie Fiori and Pierre Dumonteil both studied at Lycée Gay-Lussac (1968-1971), a boarding high school at the Limousin area in central France. Soon Dumonteil was impressed by Fiori's eccentric personality, humor, and extraordinary ability to imitate. The two remained friends until Dumonteil moved to Paris in 1974. They found each other again in the early 1990s at a painting exhibition in Paris in which Fiori was exhibiting.

 Discovery of An Exceptional Talent:

From Painting to Sculpture

Prior to their reunion, Fiori mainly focused on pictorial creations. A graduate of the painting department at l’École Nationale des Beaux-arts, he once explored the representation of the sacred with two huge panels depicting the Nativity. Since 1989, while teaching fresco at l'école Polycrea, Fiori has involved in multiple projects of architectural and interior design agencies, including a monumental trompe-l'œil fresco painting at Provins, France. Despite all the recognitions, Fiori was unable to make himself satisfied through painting.

I practiced painting for a long time, but I was not satisfied with my various attempts.

I needed volume; I was in desire of volume. It's not surprising that I worked a lot on "trompe-l'oeil". Before I concentrated on sculpture, my paintings were already thick with layers of plaster, worked and then colored. The passage to volume was thus built "naturally", I would say inevitably.

—— Jean-Marie Fiori

His desire for volume led him to sculpture. When his old friend Pierre Dumonteil, a gallerist and registered art expert in sculpture and painting of the 20th century, visited his studio and discovered his works, he strongly advised the artist to devote himself to sculpture, for which he had an exceptional talent.

Artist Manuscript

At first,  with a strong sensitivity towards material and color, Fiori executed his sculptures indirect size, unique pieces in alabaster, Maurienne gypsum, cellular concrete, or marble, to which he brought sumptuous polychromy. In 1993, his first solo exhibition "The Imaginary Tombs of Adam and Eve" was held at Galerie DUMONTEIL Paris. A large tomb wall piece that inspired the exhibition title was bought by a large German collector who subsequently commissioned several monumental works.

Soon Fiori's talent for sculpture won him more and more commissions, including 'Tour aux Bêtes(Tower of the Animals)' for the Pinter Foundation in Majorca, Spain (1997), and "Dolmen de Serris", a public sculpture for La Cité des Enfants, a newly developed school district in Serris, France (1999).

Inspired by the wonders of High Antiquity civilizations, Mesopotamia in particular, Fiori's early stone sculpture continued the artist's consistent pursuit of the sacred, which was gradually absorbed into his stylistic vocabulary, thus became the inner strength of his work.

What fascinates me in the art of "ancient" civilizations is first of all the wonder of the world.

—— Jean-Marie Fiori

 Bringing Stone to Life

Fiori's work is increasingly mature and remains true to his essential aesthetic and culture. Gradually, he became attached to animal figures, particularly birds, felines, and rams. In his studio surrounded by his “beasts” — from the pure and sleek lines of the oryx or the leopard to the rough and rugged hairs of the ram and the bear — the ingeniously translucent material allows him to expand his talent by giving rich radiation to the color that characterizes his sculptures.

Like flowers that would have sprung out of Douanier Rousseau’s paintings, with the color, the naivety, and the beauty, all his animals are magically bringing stone to life. Jean Marie Fiori’s creations are the keepers of our souls, giving us his originality, as every time I leave my house, I talk to my parrot, and I know he can hear me.

Thank you, Jean-Marie Fiori, because it is only thanks to you that those stones open up to me.

 Approaching the Bronze,

 Talent in Full Bloom

It was not until collaborating with Galerie Dumonteil that Fiori truly encountered bronze — a noble material with a long human history. In the beginning, he was not very interested in this material. Over the years, he has learned to love and understand it. However, technical difficulties and high production costs are obstacles to bringing the creation to life. Fortunately, the fact that Galerie Dumonteil takes care of all the production aspects has allowed the artist to create his bronze works without limits. Today, bronze has become the artist's favorite material.

All the beauty and the very meaning of Jean-Marie Fiori’s work is held in his simple wish to touch our hearts and sensitivities in a  straightforward way, comprehensible to everyone, leaving its mark on the universal and the timeless.

—— Pierre Dumonteil

Fiori's talent and dedication have also been recognized in the academic field. In 2009, the artist received "le Prix Edouard-Marcel Sandoz", the most distinguished art prize for the representation of animals. Later in 2012, his work was included in the significant museum exhibition "100 Animal Sculptures: from the 1930s to Contemporary Art", along with Wim Delvoye, Claire Morgan, etc., for the contemporary art part at Musée des Années 30, Boulogne-Billancourt, France.

Around 2010, Fiori's fondness for colour led him to coat his bronze creations with a shiny lacquer finish, which few would dare to associate with the all-time adored patinaed bronze, the very essence of refined elegance, not to speak of the additional high cost and long production time. Nevertheless, Fiori was able to convince Pierre Dumonteil — the partner he has long trusted and relied on — to lacquer the bronze with some of his works, which turned out to be a risk worth taking.

In 2013, invited by the Manufacture de Sèvres (France), Fiori rendered his two works, "Head of Toucan" and "Head of Macaw", in biscuit porcelain — one of Sèvres' most famous creations, transforming them into pure, dreamlike fantasy.

In 2014, Fiori created "The Monument for a Horse", a 2.6-meter-high monumental work that draws inspiration from ancient Greek ruins. Unlike the usual evocative portrait of a horse that emphasizes its sportive or physical qualities, this work of Jean-Marie FIORI, standing in an almost solemn manner, is intended to be a tribute to the Horse in general.

This majestic work was exhibited at Statue Square in Central Hong Kong during the French May (China, 2014), in front of the Hotel le Gray during Beirut Art Week (Lebanon, 2014), and at Jardin des Tuileries during PAD Paris (France, 2015).

 Enchanted Functional Sculptures

Fiori always incorporates elements of design and architecture into his established sculptural language to enrich his animal allegory, starting from the early stages of his bronze sculptures to sculptural creations that can function as side tables, chairs, cabinets, candlesticks, flower vessels, and even the outdoor monuments, "The Arch of Birds", for instance. He hopes to embellish everyday life, to fill it with wonder if possible. But he also points out that

My works remain above all sculpture, even if I am more and more concerned that they have a use.

The industrial dimension of design is foreign to me. My work remains absolutely "artisanal". The works are produced one by one, in small numbers, with an expensive manufacturing cost, and a long production time.

Preciousness, sophistication, rarity, and a desire for perfection, are my criteria. Yes, I know: it's very unrealistic...

Jean-Marie FIORI was commissioned in 2010 by the Chinese Committee of the Shanghai World Expo, for which he then created a set of Urban Furniture consisting of five benches. Drawing inspiration from Chinese tradition, he transformed this everyday object into a turtle, a falcon, a tiger, a buffalo, and a duck, reinterpreting these symbolic animals while giving them a touch of humor specific to his work. These works were placed in the promenade adjacent to the China Pavilion, offering a dreamlike pause in the hectic world of Shanghai.

The progress made by mankind and urban infrastructures has driven animals far away from the habitat and homes where they used to belong. The ecological notion has inspired the human race to re-call for the return of both nature and animals.

.

—— Jean-Marie Fiori

In 2012, Fiori received a phone call from Alberto Pinto, who told him how much he liked his work, which has touched the artist a lot. "I've taken on a new project in Gstaad," Pinto announced, "and it will be furnished in Fiori!" Alas, a month later came the news of Alberto Pinto's death. Fiori had time to make the first console for him, named "Alberto Console" as a tribute. Last February, Pinto's Paris office window also featured Fiori's "Rome Bench" in a prominent position.

[1] L'enfance de l'art

Fate, which turned a friendship into an exceptional collaboration, has thus allowed his work to be revealed, admired, and will continue to inspire future generations of art lovers.

—— Pierre Dumonteil

From the moment of the first exhibition, an exclusive collaboration, which is now thirty years old, crowned with success, has developed between Jean-Marie Fiori and Pierre Dumonteil. Fiori continues to bring us delightful, poetic surprises with his latest creations with his consistent enthusiasm and creative standards. He often speaks of "L'enfance de l'art" [1] in a double meaning when asked about his work.

[1] In French, "L'enfance de l'art" means "very easy to do, like child's play", while literally, it means "the childhood of the Art".

When you walk into Jean-Marie Fiori's studio—surrounded by his scattered drawings, tools, as well as an animal kingdom sculpted in stone and plaster casts for bronze— you feel like walking into a dream. This is the magical world that Fiori has created.

Using music as an example, the artist once compared himself to a castrato: a child's voice in a man's body. These high-voiced singers caused ineffable ecstasies in the audience. Jean-Marie Fiori, also a child trapped in an adult body, bears in mind this simple wish when creating his works:

May my brave beasts, in their immobile serenity, provoke such ecstasies in you.

.

—— Jean-Marie Fiori
