Invited by Vancouver Pride Society, our Executive Director Xin Ying shared the challenges and coping strategies of the Chinese LGBTIQ community during COVID-19 with the NGO members from Sri Lanka, Ecuador, Barbados, and Canada.

Organizing the Second Event of Beijing+ 25 Series Events
To commemorate the 25 anniversary of the 4th World Conference on Women in Beijing, our Executive Director Xin Ying planned four events to remember the conference. This event invited Xiangqi, the founder of Shanghai Nv’ai; Ermao, the ex-editor of Feminist Voices; Waiting, the ex-director of Guangzhou Gender Center; and Lisa Rofel, anthropology professor ofUniversity of California, Santa Cruz. Guests shared their experience working in LGBTIQ and women's right, and their views of the conference. In the end, the guests said that it will take a long time to achieve gender equality, and that we need to be patient and hang in there.

1. Personnel structure adjustment: the office nominated Sachi and Ren Naying for Director of Project Execution and Director of Project Development respectively. Both of them will manage and support all the projects of the Center in the future.2. Inviting community partner and loyal supporter of the Center, Tony, being Consultant of Media of the Center. Tony, as the consultant, will provide professional consulting services for the Media Department in the future.3. Working with the Media Department to film Douyin and keeping uploading new clips three times per week.4. Providing the newly recruited Director of Media Department and Director of Mental Health Department with induction training.5. The Executive Director, Xin Ying, participated in the Transgender Youth Camp training and served as the instructor of the training.

Transgender Project

Successfully Organized the National Transgender Youth CampBetween July 22nd and 24th, the Center held the National Transgender Youth Camp in Tianjin, along with 20 of our transgender friends. Twenty active transgender friends, who came from all across China, got together and learned the history of the LGBTIQA+ community, public speech skills, volunteer management, and so on. We hope, by organizing this type of events, we can attract more transgender friends across China to actively provide service and advocacy for the transgender community.
Successful Opening of National Transgender Hotline SummitBetween July 25th and 26th, we invited 20 transgender leaders to participate in a 2-day discussion about transgender hotline network in Tianjin. We discussed the outlook of future cooperation and reached two significant cooperation agreements.
National Transgender Hotline Summit
In July, we organized the National Youth Transgender Camp and National Transgender Hotline Summit, which hosted 40 transgender friends. Twenty transgender friends from all across China got together and learned the contents, including a review of the LGBTIQA+ community history, public speech skills, volunteer management, and so on. We hope, by organizing this type of events, we can attract more transgender friends across China to actively provide service and advocacy for the transgender community. During the summit, we invited 20 transgender leaders to join a 2-day discussion of the overlook of our future cooperation together, and we came to two significant cooperation agreements.

Mental Health Department

Questionnaire of China LGBTIQA+ Community Mental Health
The work of the Questionnaire of China LGBTIQA+ Community Mental Health began in 2019. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the proposed schedule was postponed. In the middle of this month, the data collection has been finished; the files have been transferred to the researchers from the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences for further data cleaning and analysis. The report is expected to be released at the end of this year.
Informal Talk about Mental Health at the Beijing LGBT Center"Hidden Corner, Hidden Humanity", the Third Informal Talk about Mental Health at the Beijing LGBT Center- Feedback Sharing of "The Bad Kids" was successfully organized on July 5th. There were lots of participants who actively expressed and exchanged their ideas. Even after the event, the psychological counselors still wanted to hear more from participants.The Informal Talks about Mental Health in the Center began in May 2020. The event is based on gender minority mental health, and every event will be an online free discussion to talk about one specific topic. This event will invite various LGBTIQA+ affirmative psychological counselors and those with psychology expertise to participate on a long-term basis.
On July 26th, the activities to promote the fund-raising for the Psychological Aid Project for Sexual Minorities came to an end. In the past two weeks, 8,428 people have donated 116,700 yuan to list the Project successfully on thousands of Alipay users’ homepages. As of August 10th, 25,811 people had donated 147,000 yuan to the Project. In the next few months, we hope that the Project will be displayed on the Alipay’s charity homepages of more users and it can reach the expected fund-raising goal.
Summer Lovin’ 2.0 - Summer Rainbow PartyOn the evening of July 31st, we cooperated with BEI Zhaolong Hotel to hold a summer rainbow party on the hotel’s terrace. More than 150 queers came to drink and be entertained in the cool summer night after a heavy rain, and enjoyed the first rainbow party of 2020. The event raised a total of more than 18,000 yuan in donations, all of which will be used for the Mental Health Project for sexual minorities and the daily operation of the Center.

Inclusion Project
Job Hunting Skills WorkshopThis workshop was carried out by the Center’s Workplace Diversity Project and Yodo1. Mr. Jonas Wolf, the head of the Human Resources Department of Yodo1, provided tips and suggestions for the LGBT community and community-friendly people to apply for a job during the COVID-19 pandemic. He shared the skills on how to make oneself visible online and self-analysis methods before submitting resumes and job interviews. In the Q&A session, Jonas also gave his own suggestions for coming out in the workplace."Queer Talk - Workplace" Sharing Session: Transgender People in the Workplace who Brave Difficulties and Challenges.The Queer Talk - Workplace Event in July focused on transgender people in the workplace. Guests Xiaoma and Yaya shared their career experiences, including stories of encountering unfair treatment, and their endeavor and advocacy for rights. Lawyer Liying Yu, a guest at the conference, also sorted out influential litigation cases about LGBT group in recent years from a legal perspective, and shared with participants how to protect themselves legally.

The Center’s Douyin Account Put into OperationIn July, the Media Department participated in the official Creation Training Camp of Douyin, established the Douyin team and started operating the Douyin account. Up to now, the team has released15 short videos on Douyin; the executive director Xiaotie(Xin Ying) answers questions in the videos, educates the public and advocate on LGBTQ issues. These videos have been viewed 600,000 times, and the most streamed video was viewed 220,000 times. There are 53,000 likes in total, and the greatest amount of likes which one video received was 28,000. The number of fans increased by 800%. The Douyin team plans to regularly and continuously produce high-quality short videos in the future, making Douyin an important platform to advocate for the Center.

Quarterly Meeting of Volunteer Team LeadersIn July, the meeting of volunteer team leaders for the second quarter was held. At the meeting, we discussed the volunteer recruitment process, the rules of file update and volunteer newsletter submission rules, and volunteer management experience. In addition, we established a volunteer introduction team, which will provide in-depth reports on outstanding individuals/groups of volunteers and will also compile the good practices of volunteers for later reference.Diversified Brand ActivitiesThe Brand Event in July has made a new attempt to transform the activities from single events to a series of events, from salon discussions to sharing sessions. Also, we continue to cooperate with guests from different backgrounds, presenting popular topics discussed within the community and people with low visibility. In short, the Center's brand activities become more and more diversified.
From June 30 to July 31, the Center received 3,913.73 yuan of single donations from individuals. The list of donators is shown below, and the names have been altered for privacy.
