In China, over 95% of the LGBTQ+ community have to work “in the closet” because coming out is risky. You might face discrimination or even worse - job loss. Silence seems to be the only option. Having to carefully dodge certain topics when chatting with colleagues, endure bias from supervisors, you can’t be your best authentic self in the workplace. No one should be shamed by being their full selves. No one should endure discrimination that should not exist in the first place. We all deserve a diverse and inclusive workplace that values merits over everything else.
That’s why we would like to borrow a few minutes of your precious time to tell you how you can help us make a difference. You can become a fundraising ambassador and invite your friends to participate in Tencent’s 99 Charity Day and donate to our project! Our Workplace Diversity Initiative aims to promote gender diversity in the workplace.

About 99 Charity Day
Tencent organizes 99 Charity Day as an annual charity event, in collaboration with many non-profits, companies, celebrities and media. 99 Charity Day, which spans from 7th Sept. to 9th Sept., is one of the largest online charity events in China.
In 2020, the Tencent Charity Foundation will spend up to 300 million yuan to match the public’s donations. From 7th to 9th Sept., all donations of 1 yuan and above will receive matching funds from the Tencent Foundation. This is a great opportunity to support charity causes.
About Our Project
The Beijing LGBT Center will launch the Workplace Diversity Initiative on 99 Charity Day this year. This is a fundraising project that addresses workplace discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals, empowers LGBTQ+ youth in the workplace, and supports LGBTQ+ people improve their work skills and navigate career development. This project includes a workplace mentorship program for LGBTQ+ youth, LGBTQ+ workplace themed events, and the development of workplace gender inclusiveness guides & trainings. In collaboration with multiple companies, international organizations, academic institutions and non-profits, we focus on influencing employers and empowering the community in this project. We hope to improve corporate policies and practices on gender diversity, raise awareness of gender diversity among the general public, and empower the LGBTQ+ community. We aim to eliminate workplace discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation and gender identity, and to create a workplace environment that promotes diversity, inclusion and equality.

About Fundraising Ambassadors
Fundraising ambassadors are core figures of this fundraising project. As a fundraising ambassador, you need to mobilize contacts, call on people around you to participate in the project, and raise money. You are our important partner, who can help the project go further and get more attention.

| Warm-up before the Project Launch
At this stage, the Beijing LGBT Center will post videos, posters and articles related to gender diversity and inclusiveness in the workplace on our WeChat and Weibo official accounts on a daily basis, thereby introducing and promoting this fundraising project. Ambassadors can forward relevant content released by the Center, so that more people will see our project and understand the current working landscape for LGBTQ+ individuals.

In the afternoon of 6th Sept., we will hold an online training session for fundraising ambassadors to introduce the fundraising event, our project, and what to do as a fundraising ambassador.

| Here Comes the Actual Fundraising!
The 3 MOST Crucial Days!
The three days from 7th Sept. to 9th Sept. are the highlight of the fundraising event. Donations made during these three days will be matched from Tencent Public Welfare and other enterprises. Also, participating in “Red Flower Collection” during this time can win you a random matching ratio ranging from 3:1 to 10:1 that doubles your goodwill.
What Can You Do During These Three Days as Our Ambassador?
1. 【Post your “Donate Together” page in social media and bring your friends in】
From 7th to 9th Sept., starting from 9 am on each day, you can post your “Donate Together” page in WeChat (Moments or group chats), Weibo or other social media platforms. You can also forward the page to your friends in private chats and persuade them to support gender diversity in the workplace.
2. 【Involve donors in red flower collecting to double the donations】
From 7th to 9th Sept., starting from 9 am on each day, most of the donations will be offered with matching funds of a certain ratio. After receiving matching funds, a window will pop up and inform you that you can now start to collect red flowers. When your collection hits 299 (which requires 10-25 of your friends to make a 1-yuan donation or to give a like), the matching funds will obtain a random doubling of 3 to 10 times. The number of red flowers resets on a daily basis, so try to collect 299 flowers each day. Besides collecting your own flowers, you also need to remind the friends who follow your “Donate Together” page. When your teammates make a donation of over 50 yuan, you should tell them about the flower collecting in order to receive additional matching funds.
How to collect red flowers?
a. After making a donation, you will be directed to the page below. Please click the red button “Ask your friends for flowers to double the matching funds”.
b. Donors can share the link in their WeChat Moments or other social media platforms, where friends can help collect flowers by donating 1 yuan or giving a like. When your collection reaches 299 (this requires 10-25 of your friends to do the aforementioned), the matching funds offered by Tencent (in the example’s case, 0.66 yuan) would receive a random doubling of 3 to 10 times.
Note: The basic matching funds for one ID each day are at most 999 yuan, while the additional matching funds won through flower collecting have no ceilings.
Q&A
Q: Why should we address LGBTQ+ workplace issues?
A: Studies have shown that only 5% of LGBTQ+ individuals in China choose to come out in their workplace (Source: Being LGBTI in China, UNDP, Beijing University & Beijing LGBT Center), while the rest (95%) have to strategically hide their identity and navigate the workplace behind a façade, for fear of discrimination or job loss. Therefore, many LGBTQ+ people are under immense pressure, which leads to mental health issues and underperformance at work.
Some suggest that there is no need to come out in the workplace, where work should be the priority. However, recent events such as the employment discrimination case of a transgender woman Xiaoma, the discrimination lawsuit of a transgender employee against Dangdang, and the case where a Chinese bar sacked pageant queen Yaya, suggest a more complicated reality that is far from equality for the LGBTQ+ community. We still have a long way to go.

Q: What kind of organization is the Beijing LGBT Center?
A: Founded in 2008, the Beijing LGBT Center is a comprehensive non-profit organization dedicated to improving the living conditions of sexual minorities in China. We provide a wide range of community services (such as professional psychological counseling, social work, hotlines, etc.) for LGBTQ+ people across the country. We organize trainings and meetings for psychological counselors, medical providers and lawyers for transgender people, and LGBTQ+ individuals. We also address discrimination and advocate for gender diversity in multiple enterprises and on several media platforms.
