14 people have been found dead and 25 are still missing after a landslide occurred around 5am local time Sunday in Taining county, Fujian, according to the official Weibo account of a local rescue department.
According to Chinese state media, more than 20 centimeters of torrential rain fell in the mountainous region within 24 hours, unleashing mud and rocks downhill that inundated the construction site of a hydroelectric power station. The office building and workers’ living quarters were all buried in mud.
Firemen and excavators arrived at the scene first, working against the clock to look for missing workers. President Xi Jinping urged “maximum effort” in the rescue.
