Plum Rains Over But 'The Great Heat' is Coming!
By Virginia Werner
While plum rain season just ended today, more extreme weather conditions are on their way to Shanghai in the form of Dashu [大暑], meaning the 'great heat' in Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Thai and other Asian languages. We don't have to go into too much more detail on exactly what that entails; the sticky, sweltering feeling that overpowers you when you step outside is proof enough!
Dashu refers to one of the 24 solar terms that traditional East Asian calendars are divided in to, and indicates the beginning of the hottest weather period in China as certain areas receive the maximum amount of sunlight and clock the highest temperatures of the year. And by high temperatures we are talking about temperatures spanning 35 to 37 degrees Celsius all week, according to Shanghai Daily.
While we can now say good riddance to plum rain season, showers may sporadically occur in the days to come. For now, prepare to hunker down for the sweaty days ahead, which will allegedly last through the first week of August.
