We virtually wept when news broke that Pirata was closing due to issues with their location, but for fans of Chef Ling Huang's cooking in desperate need of a fix, EGG can hook you up this week.
Happening from Thursday-Saturday August 11-13, Chef Ling will debut a popup of her new concept: Latin Woo Sandwich & Bar, a loanword for '拉丁屋' (lading wu) 'Latin House' – the name of Huang's mother's restaurant from many years ago.
Up for grabs will be three sandwiches (torta ahogada, Cubano double and fritas) from the new menu, which come with one boozy drink like pina colada, tamarind rum punch, mango margarita or hibiscus cooler for RMB88.
Some of these sandwiches we'd never even heard of before, so being the sleuths we are, we scoured Google for all of 10 minutes and came up with this rough introduction to the Latin American sandwiches that will be available.
Torta Ahogada
This Guadalajara-native sandwich comes served with an abundance of salsa (hence the name 'ahogada,' meaning 'drowned') and is usually filled with pork carnitas.
Cubano double
A woefully underepresented sandwich in Shanghai, simply described, the Cuban is basically a pressed ham and cheese sandwich on steroids. Like the ahogada, the Cuban sandwich worked its way to Miami via Cuban immigrants. Fillings include ham and roasted pork, cheese, pickles, and mustard on Cuban-style bread.
Fritas
Otherwise known as the 'Cuban hamburger,' fritas also originated in Cuba some time in the early 20th century and saw its popularity expand via migrants to South Florida. Inside is ground beef, shoestring fries, diced onions and tomato sauce in a roll.
For dessert, Chef Ling will be rustling up flan, key lime pie (!) and guava turnovers – save some room for those.
To get some, simply show up at EGG between 7.30-10.30pm from Thursday-Saturday August 11-13. No need to buy tickets or book. See you there!
