China Ranked 64th Safest Country in the World
A ranking of the world's safest countries has just been released by the Legatum Institute, as part of its 2016 Prosperity Index.
The safety sub-index measured three main areas — national security, personal precariousness and personal safety — in 149 societies (148 nations and the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong) to come up with an overall Safety & Security index.
The index measured data from a variety of sources, including The Gallup World Poll, World Development Indicators, Amnesty International and more.
This year China landed at 64th on the list, just behind Madagascar and ahead of Kazakhstan.
It placed behind Asian neighbors Singapore (1), Japan (3) and South Korea (29), as well as the United Kingdom (13) and the United States (53). Hong Kong (11) also placed higher than the Mainland on the list.
With all those food scandals, pollution scares, factory explosions and medical safety incidents to worry about, it's no wonder China ranked pretty low this year.
Overall, here were the top ten countries:
1 Singapore
2. Luxembourg
3. Japan
4. Iceland
5. Denmark
6. Norway
7. Germany
8. Switzerland
