That's Shanghai takes a look at the best art exhibitions of the week:


Betty Woodman: 'House and Universe' + Zhao Yang: 'Alaya'

This exhibit brings together the works of American ceramic pottery artist Betty Woodman with the first solo exhibition on the mainland for Chinese painter Zhao Yang. Though the two artists are of different genders, backgrounds, geographical locations, and artistic traditions, their works intersect on themes of “bod," “gesture” and the spaces in which they dwell.

L’Etranger Mélancolie

This exhibit at Long Musuem’s Pudong Branch showcases Chinese artists who moved West during La Belle Epoque and then after the Revolution of 1911, fusing their sensibilities with Western art techniques like impressionism and fauvism, while retaining a uniquely Chinese perspective. Paintings by Lin Fengmian, Wu Dayu, San Yu, Pan Yuliang, Yan Wenliang and Su Tianci are on display.

A Merry World

A Merry World showcases work from three of the world's most notable Pop artists, Yayoi Kusama, Andy Warhol and Takashi Murakami. The selected works are themed around depictions of flowers and floral patterns and the significance they had for each artist.

Stone Flesh

The latest exhibit from painter Hu Zi, who is celebrated for her vibrant oil paintings of rock musicians, literary greats, and artists who have an impact on her, explores themes of identity and art history through a series of portraits of Pink Floyd guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour juxtaposed with caricatures of Michaelangelo's David.

Shanghai by Erwin Olaf

The noted Dutch photographer, known for his evocative, glamorous works and their dark undertones, debuts this study of Shanghai as the second of a three-part series exploring cities in transition. Its use of historic Shanghai buildings and focus on the agency of young women are highlights.

Santi Moix - Seurí

This is Brooklyn-based Spanish artist Santi Moix’s second solo exhibition at Matthew Liu Fine Arts, featuring his most recent oil paintings, water color works and ceramic sculptures. Moix's work often utilizes clashing forms and explosive imagery to depict plants, figures and creatures in a surreal world of his imagination.
