It is of particular value to scholars and students working in sociolinguistics, literary criticism, stylistics, functional linguistic theories, literacy pedagogy, social semiotics, multimodality and applied linguistics.
The chapters cover areas such as verbal art, context of situation, semantic networks, cohesive harmony, text structure and literacy education, contributed by well-known scholars in the field such as M.A.K. Halliday, Geoffrey Williams, David Butt, Donna Miller, Wendy L. Bowcher, Tom Bartlett and Margaret Berry.
The volume contains an interview with Ruqaiya Hasan by David Butt and Jennifer Yameng Liang, and a section in which the contributors describe their connection and/or history with Ruqaiya Hasan and her work.

As Hasan nicely points out (Hasan 1985 Linguistics, Language and Verbal Art, p. 105), a particular model of linguistics is required “wherein one studies not only language in society – with society an optional extra – but also society in language – how our structures of knowledge, our personalities, our social and political institutions are created and maintained by language”.
This paper serves as an inspiring example of how linguistic researchers could approach social issues and phenomena.
Drawing from a corpus of conversations by 24 mother-child dyads, Hasan identifies four roles that mothers perform in their day-to-day lives: instructor, labourer, emotional supporter, and companion to their children. She then further elaborates on how these different types of roles are presented through mother’s talk with their children.
Based on vivid, real-life examples, Hasan continues her discussion with an in-depth discussion of the relationship between language and ideology and points out that “commonsense knowledge constructed by everyday fashions of speaking wherein the lexicogrammatical patterns of a language assume a background status, making certain concepts of reality appear inevitably real”.
It is these “constellations” of linguistic features or “semantic consistency” that point to an ideology of women’s work in Hasan’s data.
