Chinese characters constitute the oldest continuously used system of writing in the world. By virtue of their widespread current use in East Asia, and historic use throughout the Sino sphere. Chinese characters are among the most widely adopted writing systems in the world by number of users.

It may be obvious to some, less to others, but the Chinese writing system is not based on an alphabet. An alphabet consists of a small number of letters. Letters represent sounds. A lot of western languages spell out how words should be pronounced. Letters don’t have any meaning by themselves. A Chinese character on the other hand is a more complex unit. It contains an indication of pronunciation as well as an indication of meaning. There are more than 100,000 different Chinese characters. It is actually impossible to count them precisely! There are infinite variants.

The number of useful characters, for a literate person however, is “only” between 3,000 and 6,000.

That is still a huge number compared to the 26 letters of the alphabet.

The Chinese character is, not surprisingly, a pain in the neck when you study Chinese. It slows down your whole study pace and sometimes even if you spend a lot of time and extra effort to learn characters, it is still difficult to remember them. After all, they seem don’t make any sense. But what if someone can guide you, help you and assist you to learn Chinese in a wise and efficient way? Here is the Chinese character lecture we want to offer you. It will focus on the following most popular questions when people study the characters. If you’ve ever tried learning Chinese characters before, you’ll definitely find it’ll make a difference for your character study project.

1

Where and when did Chinese character originate?

2

What did the previous Chinese characters look like?  What’s the difference between each style?

3

Since Chinese characters are pictograms, why can’t I read all the characters by interpreting their shapes?

4

How many are there strokes in total in the Chinese characters? Is there a way to remember all of them?

5

Is there a rule about how the character structures work?

6

How can I memorize all the characters in an efficient way?

7

I want to type Chinese characters on WeChat and I know all the pinyin for each character, but I can’t choose the right words!

8

For each pinyin, there are always so many corresponding characters, how do I know which character is the one I want?

9

How do I choose a decent and proper Chinese name? Nothing bizarre, amusing or old-fashioned.

10

I want to get a cool character tattoo, what character can I choose?

What did other students say about the online course?

Irene

I’ve been studying Chinese in Hangzhou for one year and recently I moved back to Spain but I’ve continued having online Chinese classes with Fu laoshi twice per week before going to work in the morning. We focus on oral spoken Chinese in the class and my speaking improves a lot even though I’m not in China. I’m planning to take HSK5 in Spain this year.

n July 2017 I completed an intensive course of Chinese in Chinesetown. It was for me an enriching language learning experience, and an authentic opportunity to enhance my appreciation of China and Chinese culture.

My teachers were dedicated and adjusted their teaching to my personal interests.I regretted having to put an end to my studies after the course.Fortunately enough before leaving I was able to enroll myself to an online course for another year allowing me to keep up my momentum of learning Chinese. My teacher Julie chosen for this course made my wish come true. During this year she enhanced my reading comprehension, my main concern, and opened my eyes to the special world of concepts and ideas in Chinese.

I am looking forward to the next course with her in the coming year!!

I am studying Chinese and Japanese language at University in Germany in the second year.  the main focus in our lessons are grammar, reading-, writing skills and listening comprehension. Therefore, we have only a few opportunities to actively speak the language. When I saw a poster of mandarin studies at our library, I decided to spend two weeks in Hangzhou to have Chinese language course. That was a very good experience, have native teachers and have daily chances to listen to spoken language. To have an opportunity to speak and listen Chinese throughout the year, I started having online course. For two months I'm being taught by Leona about three times a week. I really appreciate the lessons, because I have direct feedback on my mistakes and can ask background questions about the usage of expressions. I’m looking forward to further improve my language skills, so that I will during my next travel to China not only listening to spoken language, instead speak it myself.
