aaajiao participated in “Time Gravity - Chengdu Biennale 2023” and exhibited works I hate people but I love you, landscape000, icon011. The Chengdu Biennale 2023, themed “Time Gravity”, aims to express that “time”, as the dialectic scale of the moment and eternity, has an inseparable inherent gravity itself. Every moment is both a recollection of history and a prospect for the future, giving human civilization a multi-dimensional interpretation and presentation. “Gravity” is invisible but perceptible. As technology evolves, the Internet, big data, and virtual reality have become new aggregating "gravity" for people in different times and spaces. Art has thus become a “gravity field” of gazing, perception, and expression that runs through the timeline, reflecting the diverse forms and various connections in social development and stimulating the thinking of connections.

“Time Gravity - 2023 Chengdu Biennale”, Installation View, Chengdu Art Museum, 2023
The Biennale is divided into nine exhibition sections: “Instant Eternity”, “THE SIGHT OF THE STARS MAKES ME DREAM (Van Gogh)”, “Sensing the Unknown”, “Spatial Perception”, “A Thought in A Gaze”, “Future Archaeology”, “Echoes of the Earth”, “Where the Heart Goes ”and “Constellations”. aaajiao's works are exhibited in the “Sensing the Unknown” section curated by Philipp Ziegler. This section aims to explore the possibility of imagining the unknown, surpassing the limits of human cognition, and understanding the unreachable through art, science and technology. “Sensing the Unknown” refers to a range of experiences, including the uneasiness of being in an unfamiliar environment, new situations or perspectives that challenge pre-existing assumptions and beliefs, etc. As a core concept, “Sensing the Unknown” emphasizes the recognition of the limits of human cognition and the potential of discovery and growth through uncertainty.

I hate people but I love you, 2017, Single channel video, color, sound, 25'04''
I Hate People but I Love You, is a large format single channel video installation. Set in Mac OS, the video features two cyborgs, one of which is an anticipated Asian female android, the other in disguise of a floating Möbius strip composed of pop-up windows. Both immerse themselves in a reiterated deadpan conversation: “…May I be your friend? Do I look real to you? I hope so…” “I hate people but I love you.” The classic sci-fi paradigm of dystopian sentiments regarding social interaction and loneliness is not only proven in today's social media life, but also redefines the boundaries of interpersonal emotion between users and operations.

Those who meditate in the park, who enjoy the spring sun in the subway, who walk in melting slippers on a blazing hot concrete floor and who climb out of the city water system, in these regimented landscapes I see the loss of self-consistency, sad boredom, bloated emotions, a bunch of landscapes.

The “icon” series portrays the User using the mobile app Pixelable to send social media updates. Among the friction of fingers and smart devices, fragmented attention taps against each other, hearing echoes that remain on the screen.
After I completed icon011, I met her.

Born in 1984 in Xi’an. Currently lives and works in Shanghai and Berlin.
Active online as a media artist, blogger, activist and programmer, aaajiao is the virtual persona of Shanghai- and Berlin- artist Xu Wenkai. Born in 1984—the title of George Orwell’s classic allegorical novel—and in one of China’s oldest cities, Xi’an, aaajiao’s art and works are marked by a strong dystopian awareness, literati spirits and sophistication.
