PurpleBamboo 2018-10-18

The Summer Solstice has passed, which means the hottest, most uncomfortable part of summer is coming. That is 三伏天 sānfútiān (dog days). (not gǒurì)

Three periods forming the hottest periods of summer, from mid-July to mid-August, namely: 初伏 chūfú (mid-July), 中伏 zhōngfú (late July to early August), 末伏 mòfú (mid-August).

Zhōngfú is the hottest period in a year, and we have 2 zhōngfú this year.

When it comes to sānfútiān, what Chinese people care most is: what do they eat in sānfútiān? There is an old saying:

Tóufú jiǎozi èrfú miàn, sānfú làobǐng juǎn jīdàn.

头伏饺子二伏面,三伏烙饼卷鸡蛋。

Eat dumplings in mid-July, eat noodles in late July to early August, eat pancakes with fried egg in mid-August.

In addition to the summer harvest of wheat after the joy, it is mainly to remind people that in the summer we should pay attention to improve the diet.

Because of the high temperature and sweating in summer, people will lose a lot of B vitamins and other minerals, to eat B vitamins rich food, like flour products, is more conducive to supplemental nutrition.

Here are some noodles in China below, you could have a try:

zhájiàngmiàn, dàndànmiàn, yángchūnmiàn

niúròumiàn, règānmiàn, yúntūnmiàn

májiàngmiàn, ròuchǎomiàn, dāoxiāomiàn

jīsītāngmiàn, shǒugǎnmiàn, chěmiàn

shāchámiàn, huìmiàn, àozàomiàn

Actually most of the people feel tired and sometimes even headache during this period. This is because when the temperature rises, people can only send out the heat by perspiration, which may cause dehydration and thus the insufficient blood supplying to the brain. Therefore, remember to have good rest, drink a lot of water or have a nap during the lunch time if feeling uncomfortable.
