The application of Marking Awards 2018 – a global food & beverage package design contest is initiated on Sep. 11th, 2017, and the awards ceremony will be held in April 18th, 2018 in Shanghai, China.
Reddot, the Dieline, Pentawards, IF… We believe all of these design awards are globally well-known, and we also believe you have seen more and more Chinese brands and designers’ works have been awarded as top-levels in these competitions. With Asian’s design styles gradually being explored and recognized, we realize a great need to mark, inspire and encourage more brilliant designs locally, hence Marking Awards was born in Shanghai last year. We welcome all the stakeholders in the food & beverage package value chain to join in, get a better idea of package performance and trends in China’s market, test if your package would work here and get ready to be inspired by the deep-rooted and special Asian culture.
Introduction
Initiated by FBIF (Food & Beverage Innovation Forum), Marking Awards is a food and beverage packaging design contest organized in Shanghai since 2016 while targets the global. In a forum platform where attracts worldwide attention, Marking Awards was born to find and praise brilliant Chinese F&B package designs, and encourage communication between local and global design power. In doing so, the awards committee aims to speed up local brands’ packaging innovation, package functional optimization and improve their aesthetics standards, thus finally all the stakeholders can build a creative packaging ecosystem together. Marking Awards is not only an industrial competition, but more like an attitude injecting creativity and wisdom to our daily life.
Why Marking Awards?
A competition among top level designers– Brilliant F&B packages will gather in Marking Awards 2018 and yes, it is a contest of “F&B images” between local and global design.
A stage for international communication – you will have chances to communicate F&B package design with world-known brands and designers.
A banquet for brands’ promotion. Various attention from FBIF 60+ media partners, 1800+ attendees will all be paid to the entrants. They are waiting for your “design talks”.
A live journey to industry innovation. FBIF2018 will bring the newest packaging concepts, packaging material application and trends to the scene, so be prepared and get inspiration from it.
Entry Categories
1. In-Market Entry:
An integrated package design for food or beverage which has been launched in the market, e.g. Package design for snacks, drinks, alcohols, etc.
Commercialized packaging structures, innovative functions or packaging materials, e.g. bottle cap, stand-up pouches, plant-based plastics, etc.
2. Conceptual Entry:
An integrated package design for food or beverage which has not been in the market
Creative packaging structures, functions or materials which has not been commercialized
3. 2018 Annual Theme – "Tear up Condiment"
Both In-market and conceptual design can submit work to the special annual category, but the design theme is only applicable for condiments.
*The special annual theme of Marking Awards changes every year. The theme is chosen by the awards committee, aiming to explore vigorous and interesting segment to inspire related packaging innovation. The theme of 2018 is set to be “Tear up Condiment”, which means to “tear up” the backward domestic package design for condiment, and by collecting and displaying progressive condiment package design and technology, to contribute real power to the F&B industry and promote reformation.
Entrant Description
Only if having wonderful package designs in accordance with Marking Awards requirements, we welcome brand owners, design agencies, packaging suppliers, universities, institutes and freelance designers to join in the competition.

Entry submission: from Sep. 11th, 2017 to Feb. 11th, 2018
Entry evaluation: from Mar. 1st, 2018 to Mar. 15th, 2018
Finalist notification: from Mar. 20th, 2018 to Mar. 31st, 2018
Awards ceremony: Apr. 18th, 2018
Entry Fee
1. For brand owners, design agencies, packaging suppliers and freelance designers: (in RMB)
¥500 per entry, submit from Sep. 11th, 2017 to Oct. 31st, 2017
¥700 per entry, submit from Nov. 1st, 2017 to Dec. 31st, 2017
¥1000 per entry, submit from Jan. 1st, 2018 to Feb. 11th, 2018
2. Students with valid student ID can enjoy 70% discount: (in RMB)
¥150 per entry, submit from Sep. 11th, 2017 to Oct. 31st, 2017
¥210 per entry, submit from Nov. 1st, 2017 to Dec. 31st, 2017
¥300 per entry, submit from Jan. 1st, 2018 to Feb. 11th, 2018
* “Per entry” means the entry should be for one specific product with coherent design style. For instance, a juice brand has four different flavors but their package design share a consistent concept or idea,so it is still one entry.
Application Steps
1. Fill in the entry form: (the download link of entry form is provided in the end)
One entry must be in accordance with one entry form. If you have more than one entry to submit, please make sure to fill in the entry form for each design. This is to prevent mixed or inconsistent information of design team members or entry briefs among different entries submitted by one entrant.
The entry form must be filled in inbilingual forms (English and Chinese). The entrant will not be benefited from situations like unfair judgment, wrong messages in promotion or even in the awards ceremony out of lacking or having provided incorrect information in either language.
Each entry form must be named as: company name+entry name+entry form, e.g. SimbaEvents+FBIF+Entry Form.
2. Prepare the entry:
1 visual is required as the least (max 5 visuals) to submit.
All works submitted must be photographs ordigital renders of packages.
The entry must be in A3 paper size, .jpg format (in RGB) and dot per inch no less than 300.
Each picture must be named as: company name+entry name+pic no., e.g. SimbaEvents+FBIF+Pic 1.
3. Submit your work:
What to submit: please set up an individual file for each entry, naming it as company name+entry name. Inside the file should contain entry form in .doc and entries in .jpg.
How to submit: please email your documents in compressed file or cloud storage link to marking awards@simbaevents.cn.
When to submit: from Sep. 11th, 2017 to Feb. 11th, 2018. Entries submitted later than 24:00 on Feb. 11th, 2018 will not be accepted by the Marking Awards committee.
4. Pay your submission fee (include invoice services):
Please make sure to pay your application fee within 10 working days after your entry submission. The awards committee has rights to disqualify your entry if not receiving the fee in the required time.
Marking Awards committee provides entrants with invoicing and express delivery services.
Marking Criteria
Design ( color, visual effects, originality,etc.)
Relevancy ( the consistency between the entry and the product)
Creativity ( interesting, imaginative, etc.)
Tech content ( environment-friendly, materials selected, etc.)
Practicality ( function, user experience, etc.)
Integrity ( An overall mark will be given by judges after balancing the entry’s performance in all the above aspects)
Awards Setting
1. For professional entrants (brand owners, design agencies,packaging suppliers and freelance designers):
Marking Award – having highest mark in INTEGRITY among the in-market category
Marking Concept Award – having highest mark in INTEGRITY among the Conceptual category
Marking Annual Award – having highest mark in INTEGRITY among the “Tear up Condiment” annual category
*The above three awards are the highest honor in the whole Marking Awards 2018, thus which has only one winner, while the winners’ number of the following individual awards will be decided by the number of finalists:
Marking Visual Awards: the highest mark in DESIGN;
Marking Communication Awards: the highest mark in RELEVANCY;
Marking Creative Awards: the highest mark in CREATIVITY;
Marking Tech Awards: the highest mark in TECH CONTENT;
Marking Functional Awards: the highest mark in PRACTICALITY.
2. For students:
No individual awards, but will calculate the average score of six dimensions for every creation, then announce the First, Second and Third Prizes respectively.

Food & Beverage Innovation Forum 2018 / FBIF2018 (Click to read more), themed as "the Rising of New Categories", will be held in April 18th to 20th in Shanghai, China.
