My “Flowers” and Me: An Education Relay Between Fujian and Xihaigu
—Lin Yangqiong, member of the 9th Postgraduates Voluntary Teaching Corps of Xiamen University
Ladies and gentlemen,
Good afternoon!
15 years ago, I spent a year teaching at Guanqiao Middle school in a small county called Haiyuan. Together with other two counties around, Haiyuan, being a part of Xihaigu in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in west China, was once labeled the "most unfit place for human settlement" by the United Nations.
It is also known for its "Hua'er" folk songs, which literally means "flowers" in Chinese. Local students are crazy about singing songs in the corridors and the playground between classes. I could still remember how they sang energetically to me with big smiles on their faces in that impoverished land. So I used to "punish" them by having them sing to the class if they failed to take questions or were naughty in class. On one occasion, however, Ma Xiaohua, a timid girl, was unable to answer questions and too embarrassed to sing. I patted her with encouragement, "Easy! You owe me a song today. Don't forget to come back to me when you grow courageous enough." Months passed before my farewell to them. She came to my dorm with a small bouquet of wildflowers and sang me her well-prepared song in earnest. "Miss Lin, this is my song for you. But when will we meet again?" With tears in my eyes, I said, "Keep in touch, work hard, and meet me at Xiamen University. I have faith in you." She nodded in agreement, as sincere as always. Many years later, with the top Gaokao score in the county, this girl fulfilled her promise again and became a freshman at my Alma Mater.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is just a small story between my student Xiaohua and me, but the story was only made possible by the strong relationship between Fujian and Ningxia for over two decades. And nationally, there have been more collaboration and paired assistance between the developed and the less developed areas in different parts of China at both provincial and county level. Since 1998, 218 outstanding Chinese universities have sent out 25,551 students as voluntary teachers to teach in relays in Central-and-West China.
In this long-term relay, as teachers there, we have witnessed the classrooms being transformed from adobe houses to high-tech multimedia ones. We have seen improved public services, better allocated educational resources, and the development of places like Xihaigu from a barren land to one with boundless opportunities. By witnessing history, we are also making history.
What changes could I bring? A question difficult to answer for all volunteer teachers, including me 15 years ago.
"Miss, where do you think is better, Xiamen or this place?" My nervousness exploded in my first class there when hearing students' questions like this. I was stunned. You know, Xiamen was awarded the UN-Habitat Scroll of Honor in 2004. Yet at the very moment the student asked me, the playground outside our classroom windows was still stormed by yellow dust. Looking at the children's bright and expectant eyes, I said, "Everyone loves their hometown. Here is your hometown, and let's work together to make it a better place!"
Making it a better place requires countless efforts and changes in education need more patience. In conjunction with local teachers, we tried to open up more education possibilities. We ordered books and newspapers; we played well-designed games in class and encouraged students to try group discussions to think critically; we restarted PE classes, and integrated dance into aesthetics classes; we set up weekend learning interest groups for students with learning difficulties; We tried every means to help students explore more about their potential and the world. All these above gave students the strength to believe that even if they couldn't reverse their life with education in the short term, what they learned at school could still provide them with the warmth, power, and direction to pave their way out in a long round in their future lives.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Do you still remember the girl Xiaohua I mentioned earlier? In her last year at Xiamen University, I asked her about career planning after graduation. She told me she wanted to return to Xihaigu and light the fire of hope for more students there. “It’s another pact we made, remember? The one to make it a better place.” She asked. Yes, I remember, for sure.
Now, what is quality education? Even after years of working as an educator, I can't define it precisely. I feel it takes millions of fascinating forms, among which the one I participated, the 24-year teaching relay involving hard work, trust, and belief to strive for a better future, must be one of the best.
Thank you!
