Cover Story

Here we report the discovery of a giant red disk galaxy at redshift z = 0.76. Its red color (rest frame NUV-r = 5.3), high stellar mass (~1011.6 M), and lack of more massive neighbors characterize it as a quenched central giant galaxy in a massive host dark matter halo; however, the Sersic index of its surface brightness profile is n = 1.22, indicative of a purely exponential disk. In addition, in the galactic center are found no signs of the bulge components thus no black hole. The existence of such an object is a great challenge to current theories of galaxy formation and evolution. The cover image shows the RGB images of the deep sky made by the CLAUDS u, HSC g, and z bands data, along with the magnified image of the red disk galaxy highlighting the observational surface brightness (data points) and the best fit Sersic profile (curve) (See the article (No. 279811) by Kun Xu et al.).
