I was finishing my nine-month bridging course in Chinese art history at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and it was time to think about what to do after five years in China. The atmosphere was starting to improve and people were getting on with their lives. Possibilities were everywhere and artists were starting to organize their own exhibitions. Bronwyn Thomas was also very keen on the young artist Da Gong who was in our circle of friends, thinking that his style was a breakthrough in artistic expression. While setting up the gallery in the tower I remember the many walks and bike rides between my Jianguomen apartment and the tower. Naturally, Da Gong came into the gallery fold and was offered a chance to be in the inaugural Red Gate show. His first solo show was then organized for 1992 further developing interest in his work and in him. He was offered a chance to study in the US and in 1993 he was on his way.
正当我完成中央美院为期9个月的中国艺术史进修课的时候，我开始考虑我在中国的五年计划。社会氛围正在改善，人们也恢复了生活常态。机遇无所不在，艺术家们也开始组织自己的展览。柏宁非常看好我们朋友圈子里的青年艺术家大弓，认为他的风格打破了固有的艺术表现形式。我那时住在建国门外交公寓，我记得当我们在角楼布置画廊时，我们靠步行或自行车在外交公寓和角楼之间频繁的往返。很显然，大弓加入了画廊并获得在红门画廊开业展览的机会。1992年，我们组织了他的第一次个展，进一步的拓展了人们对他的作品和他本人的关注。1993年，大弓得到了美国学习的机会，他找的了自己的方向！

一九九零年，在橙黄橘绿的金秋，我初识了布朗。布朗是一个儒雅，友善；对艺术饱含热爱，尤其对中国当代艺术充满热情，并对此有着超凡鉴赏力的澳大利亚人。
在九一年绿树阴浓的盛夏，布朗在层楼叠榭，雕梁绣户的东便门角楼开办了红门画廊。我荣幸获邀参加了红门画廊的首届联展。我参展的一件三联幅的“笼子”系列作品有幸成为红门画廊首展售出的第一件作品。九二年七月我又成为第一个在红门画廊举办个展的人。同年的十月又参与了由布朗发起并组织的义展募捐。随后，感谢布朗的力荐，我收到了美国丹佛大学艺术学院和美国亚洲文化交流协会的共同邀请，于九三年赴美国。
从红门画廊开业到我转道英国赴美的一年半的时间里，红门画廊售出了我的二十多件作品。期间我看到了布朗对艺术的挚爱；对艺术家的热忱；对朋友的诚信；对画廊管理的严谨，以及他天赋的对艺术市场的敏锐判断和他锲而不舍的精神。 红门画廊之所以三十年持久不衰并成为画廊中的翘楚，正是基于布朗的这些优秀的品质。红门画廊也给我们参展艺术家提供了一展才华的平台，施展抱负的天地！布朗是一个对中国当代艺术发展有着特殊贡献的人。
我后来定居加拿大，依旧继续我的艺术探寻。从布面油画，继而从业影视的数码特效制作。日月如梭，至今已是二十余载。
每每忆起往事，想起昔日的友人，红门画廊的人和事总是栩栩如生，历历在目，永远在我的心灵中和脑海里占据着不可或缺的位置！
衷心恭贺红门画廊成立三十周年！

In the autumn of 1990, I met Brian for the first time. Brian is an elegant and friendly Aussie who is full of love for Chinese contemporary art, sharing extraordinary appreciation of it.
In the midsummer of 1991, Brian started the Red Gate Gallery at the Dongbianmen Watchtower, where there are many pavilions. I was honored to be invited to the first group exhibition. The "Cage" series of triptych paintings that I exhibited was the first work sold in the first exhibition of Red Gate Gallery. In July 1992, I became the first person to hold a solo exhibition in Red Gate Gallery. In October of the same year, I also participated in the charity exhibition Ku Xueguang Benefit organized by Brian. After that, thanks to Brian's recommendation, I received a group invitation from the School of Art, University of Denver and the Asian Association for Cultural Exchange to go to the United States in 1993.
In the one and a half years from the Red Gate Gallery to my transfer to the United States, Red Gate Gallery has sold more than 20 of my works. During this period, I saw Brian's love for art, enthusiasm for artists, honesty to friends; strict management of the gallery, as well as his natural keen judgment of the art market and his perseverance. The reason why Red Gate Gallery has lasted 30 years and become the best gallery is precisely based on these excellent qualities of Brian. Red Gate Gallery also provides a platform for our artists to show their talents and ambition!
Brian is a person who has made a special contribution to the development of Chinese contemporary art.
I later settled in Canada and continued my artistic exploration. From oil painting to digital special effects production. As time flies, it has been more than 20 years.
When I remember the past and my friends in the past, the people and things in Red Gate Gallery are always vivid. They always occupy an indispensable position in my mind and heart!
